Heya. I'm a big fan of older dungeon crawlers like Nethack and the Wizardry games, but I'm hesitant to get this game as I did not enjoy Dungeons of Dredmor, another modern take on the classic dungeon crawler. I found the combat in Dungeons of Dredmor to be mundane and repetitious, and the environments to be drab and boring, but the puzzles were great. It seems that the Paper Sorcerer environments, while maybe a bit repetitious, are a at least more interesting than Dredmor's and the turn based combat seems much more dynamic and engaging. Am I correct in this assessment? Does Paper Sorcerer have any puzzles? Do you think I would like the game?
Stylistically the game is close to the older Wizardry games, albeit without the incomprehensible puzzles that those were known for - there are puzzles, but they're reasonably logical ones rather than the "guess what the developer was thinking" variety. I'm not sure how dynamic I'd call the combat, but there's certainly more to it than "pick which target to hit", since every character develops a fairly eclectic set of abilities as the game goes on.

The combat is something like a cross between classic Wizardry and Eye of the Beholder. There is no modern Hack 'n' slash.

The battles in the main part of the game are mostly "set battles", so they're quite well balanced, and each level usually adds new enemies. There are random battles that you can grind out in a separate area, which is a great take-it-or-leave-it feature. Like any game, it can get repetitive, but it's quite good for what it is. The large selection options for your party also help to keep it fresh

The puzzles are largely bugged or broken at this point. There's not all that many of them, and several you cannot complete. There is also the very real danger of using items, have them not work, and having no way to get them back, which can result in broken quests/unopenable doors, etc.

If you're not a completionist, or like to play on the easiest difficulty setting, this is a good game. If you like to finish quests, or want to play on the hardest difficulty setting, this game is just broken.
