After downloading and installing Panzer General II, PANZER2.EXE would crash at launch complaining about ddraw.dll.

After following some advice on this forum to rename ddraw.dll so that the application would not find it, the game would launch. However, after a handful of turns, the game's colors would become an unplayable garbled rainbow. I also tried installing DirectX 9.0c as suggested in this forum, but experienced the same issue.

After contacting GOG.com support, they too suggested installing DX9. So I tried things differently. I uninstalled PG2 & DX9 (DX9 isn't uninstallable, but I had made a restore point before installing as suggested by Microsoft on the download page), and reinstalled both (using Run as Administrator just in case), but I *did not* rename ddraw.dll, and things are working so far!

SO IN SHORT, if you're having problems with PG2 on Win7, try installing DX9 <http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=3b170b25-abab-4bc3-ae91-50ceb6d8fa8d> and PG2, but DO NOT rename ddraw.dll. At least that's what worked for me.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the post. I tried everything you did with the same results. Now it appears to be working.
After numerous problems and attempting several of the weird and wacky solutions to the issues of
a - the exe failing to load
b - weird graphics from the start
c - mouse sticking after clicking on "campaign"
d - the graphics going all 'trippy' after 15 minutes of play.

The above solution worked perfectly - no need to delete smack files, no need to rename file, no need to exit and restart the game when the display went funky.
I just reinstalled PG2 (I'd already installed DX9) and it worked perfectly from start to finish - I played for 3 hours last night without a single glitch.
Thank you, this is the only solution that worked..
On the other hand, GOG did not even replied to my message, do not think will be doing business with company that does not test their own product anymore.
I run windows 7 64 and just had to run it in admin mode and every thing worked fine.

Maybe you already had the microsoft download already installed?

The game CAN work fine on win7 systems, but without the download - it verges on the unplayable (having to restart the game every 10 turns or so, because of funky graphics).

Pretty sure they test all their games quite extensively. But just remember, you're talking about a company that has just a handful of employees and computers at their disposal. We're not talking Microsoft, Bethesda, or 2K Games that have hundreds of different settings and people to test games for compatibility. Give them another chance as I've purchased a fair number of games and have only had issues with Panzer General 3D.
I love how they have these users posting company pr and excuses
