I have a problem with Panzer General 2. The game crashes when started, and DirectDraw Init FAILED error occurs. It can be only closed. I've tried several solutions: running as administrator, in compatibilty mode, changed the name of ddraw.dll.intel, deleted d3dx9_42.dll file and downloaded June 2010 DirectX runtime package, and nothing helped. I would be grateful for any solution as at the moment 9.99 USD was thrown away.

I googled and found some information on this error.

it appears that this error occurs when something tries to call a 640x480 video mode that your system doesn't recognize/support usually because of a bad refresh rate or bit depth value. Not sure what kind of solutions are available for fixing this, though.


one of the age-old problems caused by a game's incompatibility with Windows font/icon sizes being increased from their usual value. Going into Control Panel > Display and dropped those sizes back to 100% should fix it . . . even if looking at the tiny icons on your desktop from across the room will make your eyes bleed until you change it back.

I had no problem with the current version of PG2. If it didn't work, try putting this dll in the game directory. Otherwise, there is this unofficial patch which might help.
