Is this game any good? if so, why? I fail to see the appeal of this game, at least from the screenshots

Just got this!
Is it any good? Well u like to try something different? I guess I bought it cuz it is a game which will play like the real thing, as far as comp games go. I'm imagining the game to play something along the lines of:
*dam where's that switch for engine
ah here it is, oh ops just fired my main gun
*turns on the engine and forget to release the brakes, rolls downhill and hit a ditch
now where'm i suppose to go again aw **** i cant remember cuz i didn't read the objectives
*goes back to study manual/read help files/search for FAQs/read reviews/do proper prep
I think it's going to be a confused but fun ride once I play/mess around with it.
Oh yeah since this says "Elite Edition" I'm guessing the original game did at least moderately well for it to be rereleased before GOG got hold of it and repolished it spanking new for us.
There's a forum thread about it over on another site that covers games of war, tho I think others might jump in and answer the Qs I didn't A.
PS Reviewer @ Wargamers linked to this this morning, so some knowledgable peeps should be poping in, hopefully.
I have been looking for a decent tank sim for a few years. Well, every time I read a Michael Pound or Irving Morell segment of Turtledove's books, I get in the mood.
Is this a unit level game (one tank), a squad level game (a few tanks), or a full RTS where you just happen to be in a tank?
This is a tank SIMULATOR, not an RTS or a shoot-em up -- you can realistically do everything a tank commander could do from his cupola. There's a definite learning curve, and folks looking to quickly head out in their trusty Panzer to blow stuff up are going to be frustrated.
This is a squad-level game, but again, you're giving commands from the tank.
Hell yes!
Thanks, that is exactly what I wanted. I was afraid it was going to be an RTS masquerading as a tank sim (there are a bunch of those).
I'll order it later.
Thanks for the answer
It's been a LONG time since I've played this game, but as the guy above me said it's a tank simulator, not a "shoot 'em up" or standard RTS game. The controls and such aren't all that hard to get down, no worrying about what switches/dials to click on, I don't think it modeled detail at that level, as pretty much everything you need to do comes easily on the mouse/joystick and keyboard. You'll end up spending most of your time playing as tank commander, issuing move, fire, and formation orders over playing around in the driver/gunner positions, though they can be fun as well (and you can jump back and forth if you want).
It certainly isn't an easy game, and if you don't understand WWII tank tactics and how to implement them, get ready to get killed often.
