Any idea how does multiplayer/matchmaking work? I wonder if we can play only with GOG players or worldwide, with Steam and other platforms.

Sadly , it's GOG only. Citing one of reviews:
That being said, the game's online multiplayer only works within GoG and does not support multiplayer with Steam copies nor other consoles.

Sorry for necroposting but the information provided here could mislead. As of 2024, the GOG version utilizes multiplayer from Team17. It allows to play together with people from Steam (who have switched to the crossplay_branch) and from EGS.
