Since the game is going to be on sale very soon, I was wondering who will be getting the money? The original company went bankrupt years ago.

I'm not certain, but the original game was published by Infogrames and according to Wikipedia Inogrames has since merged with Atari. So my guess is that Atari own the rights. Also the game page for Outcast on GOG lists Atari as the publisher.

Hmmm... thanks. It seems weird to me that people who had nothing with making the game are making money off it now... I believe that if enough time has passed, and the developers won't be getting a cent, it should be abandonware.
The only reason I see for buying, is that gog are making the games work on modern machines.

Well that's usually how these deals work. The studio is paid up front by the publisher to make the game, then the publisher sells the game and makes money from the sales. Sometimes the studio also sees a cut of the profits from sales, but usually they are paid before the game is released. So it may seem that Atari / Infogrames had nothing to do with making the game, but they did pay for it... the studio wouldn't have been able to make it without that funding.

Personally, I like to have the chance to buy games even if the original developers don't see any of the money anymore because I hope it will convince more publishers to make their back catalog available for sale. There are lots of great older games that I think modern players would enjoy, even if it's partially (or wholly) out of historical interest. Like fans of Fallout 3 going back and checking out the first two games, for example.
I guess it makes sense. I'm all for supporting the games that I like. That's why I don't buy AAA games at all. Even though some are nice, buying them only hurts the industry that I want to see.
not sure if it's abandonware or not, but there is a team currently working on a sequel using CryEngine 3 (open Outcast http://www.openoutcast.org/wp/ ).
