I bought this game on it's initial release, back in the day, at full price, but my P166mmx at the time just couldn't do it justice. It has since sat in a box in my attic and my modern pc just won't play it. I recently re-bought the gog version, installed the high res patch and WOW, just WOW!! I mean graphically by modern standards it's butt ugly, but it has such a distinct graphical style, the game world is epic, the script/plot is interesting, combat is a bit meh so far though. I'm about 3 hours in and I'm loving it thus far.

Anyone on the fence about getting this, do it, it is a game well worth playing.

Outcast = 100% WIN!

This game still absolutely destroys most modern, open world, semi-RPG, action adventures.

Can I buy that boxed copy from you? I sincerely regret ever selling my original.

I managed to find a boxed copy on ebay without much trouble. Looking now, there are several copies available but it doesn't look like they want to ship to the UK. Might be worth keeping an eye out though.

Just sold my original DVD-ROM after bying GOG.com version and installing the hi-res patch. I still love it, too. The athmosphere, the characters, the whole story is very intriguing! I run it in german and the german voice of the Ulukai is the synchronous voice of Bruce Willis! :-)

And of course the soundtrack is grandios. I was sucked into this game those days that I had to finish it at new years eve! (About 10 Minutes after midnight, I finished it and watched the fireworks through my window. :-}

I never played any adventure after Outcast any longer than a few minutes/hours - nothing came close to it, so far. Good to have GOG.com. Now I can play Outcast on my Linux computer with hi-res patch. Yahoo!

I bought my first copy of Outcast from amazon.co.uk (Two CD's in a DVD cover. I think I even found the link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Atari-Outcast/dp/B00004UBS6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1241422184&sr=8-1 ). If you're lucky maybe you can find a hardcopy here. I looked up Outcast on amazon.com also, but that was almost 10 times more expensive.. (the new ones, there was some used there also).

Anyway I fell in love with that game! No game have measured up since.

One exception is another old game I played before I knew about Outcast, Anachronox. A bit different, but very enjoyable and an awesome story as well.

However none of the newer games seemed to measure up. Not Mass Effect 1 nor 2 nor Fallout 3. Those are what comes to mind as the closest of the few I've tried since, but not really close at all (I still enjoyed those though). In particular I was very impressed with the AI and the living world they managed to make in Outcast.

For the moment Im testing another game I just learned about (thanks doglikesparky!); The Precursors. And I have to say it seems very promising!

Anachronox was awesome! Since it wasn't as well known, it's pretty easy to find used copies around. I got mine off of ebay for cheap. Definitely worth it. I also got The Precursors, but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet as I have a big backlog of games right now. I'm also pretty excited... I've heard that there's even some space flight sim mixed in, which you can play with a joystick and everything.

Anachronox started my love for "long games" (RPG-ish single-player sci-fi type), which I didn't really bother with until then. But it kinda have to be with a sci-fi theme. I read similar, but I haven't gotten as far yet. I was a bit disappointed with the first off-planet mission, or rather the "flight" to get there. I guess it gets better in time when you get your own ship. Also I find it pretty hard (even on easy). Btw I must say that first planet looks awesome with a really well made map!

To get back on-topic a bit: I found the slow-moving bullets, especially from the first pistol rather unusal at first. But now I think it adds to the fun, really. Both you and the NPC/AI have time to react for example. Some might say it makes it too easy, maybe so, but personally I like it!

Yeah it's definitely a wonderful game. There hasn't been any game worlds since, which captured my attention as much as the one in Outcast other than The Longest Journey.

I think the combat is quite fun, especially with the pistol, although the landscape clings to you occasionally, which is annoying, but nothing a sturdy jump can't fix. It would have been fun if the game randomly supplied a map with new soldiers because really, those two guys escorting the Twon Ha around aren't all that difficult to dispatch.

You can actually change the values for the weapons in one of the .ini files and tailor them to suit the challenge you're looking for.
