I finished the GOG version of the game a few weeks ago with no problems except for occasional crashes.



Well, it's not like there isn't system in place. One problem is that all files need to go thru GOG QA process and GOG makes it's own installers then uploads them while Steam offers devs direct access to file hosting servers. However, even if GOG changed the system to work the same way as Steam does (at least for Galaxy game updates), it still would not solve devs threating all other stores (not just GOG) as 3rd class citizens (uploading patches only if and when they feel like it).

Well, I would not really put down the Gog system for the following reasons. First I'm writing this on August 1, 2015.

Look at the Outcast Steam Page ... the latest news and update shown says 1.1.6.18976. Yet, as you can see someone has posted about the new Steam version back in may (1.1.6.19100).

So the Steam news and updates are, as is often the case, not informing the Steam people of the latest, it will simply auto-update to 1.1.6.19100 but they aren't really on the ball there either, are they?

Not to excuse Gog currently. This thread and the patch I just found on Gog because of the little blue dot warning on My Shelf for Outcast, well they have the right version numbers.

But look at the Stickies, and the one that lists all the updates. It doesn't even mention 1.1.6.19100.

My point is, neither system is using its resources correctly. However, Steam did, I guess, get the patch first. Of course, unless you see it download, you wouldn't know. Gog, lets you know when the patch is available, and the downloader has the right number on the patch, but there is no really accurate thread about it ... well except this one.

So, let's not call Steam better than Gog. Steam got the file earlier, but you'd never be able to be sure it was 1.1.6.19100. Gog got it later, but if you check the name of the patch file on your hard disk, you'd know it was the new version, however you won't know by the update thread here.

Both Steam and Gog, and it really is dependent on the constant vigilance of the developers, aren't using all their resources to the max. It may be lack of communication, it may be overloaded workforce. But one thing is clear -- this thread is the only mention of it even on the splash news that kicks up off the Outcast 1.1 game launcher.

So, even the devs aren't being vigilant about getting the news right out there. In some sense, 1.1.6.19100 might be considered vaporware if you just went by the news, or a trap or trick. It isn't, but there ya go.

I'd throw in that this is happening more and more in this multitasking computerized world. We were supposed to use these computers to keep our records more accurate and up to date. But across the board, in software development even outside of gaming, you see the same version nonsense all over the place. Even with Windows Update, if you read the extra info on the two click options next to each update (More Information and Support Information), you sometimes get a non-existent page or gobbledeegook, that will vary from one page to another. As a consumer you get the feeling that either it's a low priority or that staff are overwhelmed. Both are indicative of it being a low priority, understaffing or being disorganized comes to the same thing.

This is probably why one day we will be taken over by robots and the like, it will be easy for such an attempt to slip through the cracks because there is no staff or time or organization to keep up the necessary vigilance.
