Having only ever played the classic version of Outcast, I'm finally trying out v1.1. I vaguely remember discussions of the higher resolution support, suggesting that very high resolutions didn't run very well, and that widescreen resolutions cut off some of the vertical view (e.g., Cutter's legs).

Is that correct? I'd like to go as high resolution as possible but don't want to cut anything off or otherwise cause visual glitches. I'm happy to play letterboxed if that's needed. Anyone have thoughts on what resolution works out best for v1.1? Thanks!

OK, I did some experimenting. It looks like the widescreen resolutions do indeed reduce the vertical field of view, so everything looks a little too zoomed in. So I decided to try the highest 4:3 resolution that would fit on my 1920x1080 display. I settled on 1360x1024, which is not EXACTLY 4:3 but it's quite close (the original game ran at the very low 4:3 resolution of 512x384).

On the bright side, all resolutions, including 1920x1080, ran at more or less maxed out resolution (it's capped at 30 FPS to fix speed issues) on my machine, at least in Ranzaar. But that's a small area, so we'll see how things behave when I get to Shamazaar. It looks surprisingly good, and the new settings include a choice of default control schemes, including a "modern" mouse and keyboard layout that's very close to what I set up for myself in the original game after lots of key rebinding. It's also playing nice with my screen capture software (MSI Afterburner).

For the record, I'm running with a rather old core i5 760 CPU without any overclocking. I'll post back later if I run into performance problems in the larger areas like Shamazaar, but for now, my recommendation for anyone looking to try out v1.1 is to pick the largest 4:3 resolution that fits your screen, which is 1360x1024 for a 1080P display.

EDIT: Still running great in Shamazaar!

Why not 1440*1080?
