I have just uninstalled the Windows Media play in my edition of Windows 7. I tried to use the Outcast 1.1 launcher but whenever I click "New Game" I get an generic error message. This didn't happen with the WMP installed and is most likely related to the fact that the game's opening is played via WMP (which is rather stupid).

Can anyone verify this problem?

And before you tell me to reinstall the player please keep in mind that there are several editions/releases of Windows 7 which don't include the WMP. This is a rather serious issue. It would be great if the devs remove the WMP requirement and find another way to play the opening movie.

I forced .WMV to be played by MPC HC and it works for me. Highly recommended player btw.

MPC-HC is my default player and the standard for playing WMV files. Sadly it didn't fix the problem.

Maybe you're missing a codec? I use CCCP.

How did you do that? I mean, I know how to set a default player for different file formats, but apparently that's not what you're talking about.

Apparently? That's exactly what I'm talking about or what did you think I meant? I probably should have written default rather than forced but since my original WMP is either broken or disabled (I don't remember) it's most likely it will be played by MPC HC since I don't have installed any other video players.

I didn't know what you meant, it was the first time I heard "forcing" in this context so I thought that you meant something different I'm not aware of. Especially since changing the default player had absolutely no effect for me. I'm wondering now whether uninstalling (or updating) WMP may help, though.

Anyway, thanks for the reply.

I only disabled the wmp and the game starts normally. Except for the intro, that does not play.

Any solutions for this, aside reenable the wmp?

Unfortunately, no. I use MPC HC and the intro does not play.
