I think I'm reaching the end of the first continent but I'm having trouble finding where to place the last essence stone. This the stone that the dying alien gives you in the main temple. Now I'm running around the main temple but can't find the altar on which to place this stone.
If somebody could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

you need to put the correct essence stones in the other temples first. If you do it correctly, something will change permanently in the main temple, which will allow you to reach the last altar.
Hint: the essence stones you need to put in the temples are not the ones corresponding with the symbol *on* the temple. The Shamaz in the northern (I think it was the northern one, it's the shamaz who wants something to re-energize him) temple can give you a hint about which symbol needs to go in which temple.
