I am using Zenger's V3 hi res patch and playing at 640c480 and got the jumping music. I run it with his music patch and the music jumps a lot less, but you cannot change the music volume. When you use the slider the sound effects get louder but the music doesn't get quieter!

Anybody have this problem? Is there a solve?

Thanks
Sure, just change the Sound acceleration in dxdiag (Start from "Run", type dxdiag, Hit [Enter]) to Basic and you will have the sound without jumps.
Thanks - will try that! :)
EDIT:
I lose surround sounds when I go to basic Directx sounds, Same when I use the Zerger's music patch. Without the patch and at normal sound acceleration I get the jumping music that changes volume. I have the same problem with vanilla.
Either having horrible 4 channel or okay 2 channel I am not so sure I want to call GOG's Outcast 'working'.
The whole point of Outcast having a 3D sounds option is because it has 3D sounds. If I can't have this I am not so sure I have a working game.

EDIT 2

I put this here as I cannot get this website to upload my support problem or my DXDIAG.txt file

If I put the sound accelerator down to standard, as suggested, I still get the music skipping and changing it's volume. To avoid the skipping etc, I have to turn the sound down to basic, but by doing that I lose 3D sounds/sounds from my rear speakers.

This leaves me with a choice of the music being okay but only from the front two speakers or have it skipping etc through 4 speakers.

I have never had a problem with any of my previous GOG games, but as it is, I feel Outcast is still 'broken'.

Since I do not want to open another thread I am putting this in here. The thing with the music is plain annoying (not the skipping, but the volume) I cant hear what people are saying when music is playing... That is absolutely horrible. The .ini Tweaks wont work since outcast just overwrites the .ini file every time I start.. is there any solution for this problem?

Edit: found a temporary fix. Not sure if it actually works, but the music seems to be quieter. Editing the .ini file during the game session and then not touching the sound option seems kinda helping.

Edit 2: found permanent solution: There are 2 ini files of soundcards in the folder. Guess that is where the Outcast.ini is rebuilding itself from. So change them and you should be good. At least it works for me

... coming in late to this just to say thanks to GDG1983. I was very pleased to get hold of the GOG version of this game and be able to play it again, but the inability to lower the volume of the music made it essentially unplayable for me. Then following the suggestion here I lowererd the values of MusicVolumeMin and MusicVolumeMax in soundcard_other.ini. It works! Finally i can play the game without the Moscow Philharmonic blaring away and drowning out everything else. Thank you! (it would still be good to be able to dynamically change the volume during gameplay but at least it's playable now).
