Maybe I am turned around. I have a stone from the hut in the Northeast. I have a stone from the hut near the Temple Fae. I killed all the soldiers at Temple Fae. As I was was walking around the joint, a Talan popped up and gave me a third stone. Is that the way the game plays?
I have a roughly round stone with a slit. I have a roughly triangular stone with a slit. I have a thin stone which goes down left, right, down left. The ends are pointed. Are these the stones I should have? In any event, I don't know the names.

Naarn should come trough the Daoka at Temple Fae after you deal with the soldiers there, and yes, he's carrying a stone and he gives it to you, so that's ok.
But if you already have the stone you got from Naarn you should have 4 stones. 1 from the hut in the Northeast, 2 from huts around Temple Fae and the one you got from Narn, so try to look for the essence stone you're missing.
