Original War is most likely a game you have never heard anything about, and if you have its been probably bad, which is unfortunate. Review sites panned the game for weak RPG elements, odd design choices and the worst voice over work ever. The only one I'd really agree with is the "worst voice overs EVER", they are truly heinous. If you can get past the voice work there is a fairly deep stratagy game here that requires planning [unique for an RTS] and understanding the strengths and weakness of team members and units. When the game was released as a budget title some years ago, like I said, was blasted by many reviews. Howver, it seems now that I have played it extensively that reviews had preconcieved notions of a budget title and maybe played the game for an hour or so before rendering their verdict.
Given a fair chance this title stacks up against and beats some of the big titles. There is much more strategy versus Command Conquer [versions released then and in some cases now] you have to consider elevations, stance and unit stats etc, you can't produce infinite troops so you have to plan and invest in good vehicles and defenses all the while making "mission critical choices". In my opinion the visuals have aged VERY well, and for the most part looks on par with more modern games [the unit sprites however are bland] On the down side this game has a heavy trial/error approach so saving often is required. Also it plays at a snail's pace, so this might not appeal to everyone. Overall its a fairly unique and methodical approach to the RTS genre, one worth trying.
