Move slowly, wait for right time to attack, and save the game and then take men to have a look around to locate items and then revert back to the save as needed. Also, do not waste resources. It takes time to figure it all out but that is half the fun.
What Faithful said.
Also in combat don't hesitate to pause the game (spacebar), analyze situation and give orders (yes, you can give orders while game is paused).
Train your people if you have spare time. Some are versatile and they will learn faster. Point with your cursor on someone's skill and you will see how many xp he/she needs to gain skill up.
When you attack, slow down the game a bit, retreat with wounded people, heal them and continue.
If you play as the US, use radars for better visibilty. OTOH as Russian use both special shots the bazookers have. Teleportation shot is good against a group, because it will displace enemies (randomly).
A few tips:
1) if you start losing men go to the main menu and select quick restart - that lets you skip all the intro talk stuffs and get right back into playing. Generaly speaking if you lose men its best to restart (or go to a savepoint if your not worried about the medal) since you need to keep as many men alive as you can - as you get more into the game they get more experience and become very valuble troops
2) When fighting keep an eye on the health of your troops - often the enemy will focus its attacks on one solider at a time - watch the health bars and learn to retreat your troops as soon as the go to yellow health. Pull them back from the fireline - the ai might follow, but its more likley to just start attacking another close trooper. With the retreated trooper set the medics on them to get them healed back up.
This is also true of tanks as well = when damaged pull them back. With static defences often you can take them out with attack retreat cycles (though keep an eye out for builders repairing the buildings - if they do attack and kill the builder)
3) If the fight is going bad and your on the attack "runaway" is a very valid move if you have it as an option! Retreat, heal, rebuild and attack again! If your on the defensive remember that you can shoot out of the barracks building with garrisoned men
4) In defence whilst turrets are great things a simple solider in a sandbag setup can still put down a lot of fire and take quite a bit too! Its good cheap early defence
5) Always try to keep troops in their specialist jobs - that is high soliders as soldiers high medics as medics etc... since you will get better performance out of them that way. Note that often you will have to use them for other things - troops if you come under attack, builders for quick building etc.... so don't be afriad to multitask them either.
6) When your selecting troops for a new mission in the bottom left hand corner you can change their job (sometimes limited by the mission) so always make sure you have at least one medic in your squad if you can. If your going into a mission where building (always expect building) is present make sure someone starts as a builder.
7) Always keep an eye on your objectives, both primary and secondary. Some missions will put pressure on you and you might very well want to attack the enement base head on - but if your set to defend the base then defend it.. Often triggor events might suddenly put arabs against you or reinforcements for the enemy - and if you just sent all your men on the attack...welll...
8) Tanks - when either attacking or defending always try to capture enemy vehicles. With this in mind always keep at least one or two mechanics around with a high mechanic skill. Combine this with focusing your attacks on selected enemy units as as they go into the red pause the game. Now do a few things - firstly the driver of the tank will get out and start shooting - set your gunners onto him, but any splashdamage units (gun tanks, morters etc..) set to attacking another enemy unit otherwise splash damage will kill that tank you want. Then you are on a timer til the tank burns itself apart - so push the enemy back till its safe to send in the mechanic without them being shot (sometimes you can get away sending them right into the fight and sometimes not - keep an eye on their health).
If you grab the tanks in a semi working order pull them back to get them out of the fight and give them a proper repaire - once in the yellow you can even abandon them and send the mechanic back to repair another.
Note never repair a computer controled tank (that is to say a tank with the computer control upgrade - you can tell as the unit description wil say computer controled) as the computer will take over again and start shooting - instead kill this tank.
That is all I can think of for the moment I am sure there is more!
Brilliant Advice! Thank You!
Something I use with some frequency is having my soldiers hit the ground and go prone. It's slower, yes, but if they do it while firing from behind a tree with a scientist close by to offer support, you can really dish out some damage and take less yourself. Sometimes two medics can heal the wounded unit as fast as he's taking damage. I always take two scientists with my squad of soldiers, so they can heal each other if need be. Otherwise, if your one scientist is wounded badly all your soldiers will do is watch him bleed to death.
I love firing from the higher ground. It really improves your firing distance and some hills are very hard to reach or downright impossible on a vehicle.
Stealing enemy vehicles is quite productive. Sometimes you end up with a rig you can't even build yet and it takes less time to steal than build.
"Stealing" buildings is also pretty good. If you're raiding a base, you can try to have an engineer tag along, though they're easy to kill, so be very careful. Still, taking a building for yourself takes less time than destroying it, depending on how many troops are doing the attack.
Training apemen can be a hassle, but once you got a couple, they're always helpful for mundane tasks like resource gathering and helping build bases faster. In a pinch, like a random enemy soldier attacking your helpless base, you can always throw them at the enemy. Cold, I know, but they're the only expendable living units in the game. They don't level, there's no unit limit on missions (build more farms!) that I know of or morale loss for losing troops (except your own when you look at that gray, somber, portrait staring right back at you and wondering why... WHY!?), so spending some time training apemen (on non-timer missions) can be useful.
Cannons and lasers are good against vehicles and buildings, but not as good against people, machine guns and Gatling guns are good against people but not as good against vehicles. Use that to your advantage and their disadvantage.
The game itself is not really that difficult. It's NOT LOSING MEN what makes it difficult. :-)
Oh, minor last note. An apeman flashing up on your screen and going UGH! UGH! does not mean he's bored and wants to play poker. Apemen don't complain from boredom. Ugh Ugh! means "Crates here!" in Apeish.

Oh nice more advice, yes that rhymes too huhu!
Is this game too easy on easy? Should I just stick to normal? I generally play 90% of my games on normal and the rest on hard or very hard.

I don't want to dissapoint but I think that is a squirrel you have there not a lemur ;)
As for difficulty I started in normal and its been a challenge so far - the main part though is keeping men alive. If you don't care about them (Save for the lead guy) then you can go through the game quicker losing the odd man here and there - but as said earlier if you take hits early on then later on it gives you a weaker pool to choose from which makes later missions harder still - sometimes its a right pain to have to restart a map for the 5th time or more because you made a silly mistake and lost a man! But its a challenge!
Yes the reason for the squirrel is that I could not find my choice foto for a lemur so I went with the odd google squirrel.
There is another gentleman on this site who has a Lemur for his avatar but his quote is Monkey Man.
I jokingly accused him of making fun of my Lemur Loving squirrel.
