If you never use GOG Galaxy, can you play against other in the standard "Network multiplayer" mode?

This question came up on discord and I was wondering if anyone had already tested it.

Yes, you do not need GOG Galaxy to play mp.
I have played a few mp games vs a friend that is using his Steam version.
Using the 'Network' lobby, we have had no issues, but...have had a blast. :)

I guess I should update info on this.
Since some time in autumn last year, MP without store clients was broken, and then support for it was removed.
Now GOG Galaxy is required for any type of MP except hotseat.

A bit late again with the info update: Ever since version 1.0.70671 (2024-01-31), all restrictions for Network multiplayer games are lifted and those now work without any of the store clients like GOG Galaxy again.
Cloud games use store-specific features (storage, sync) and will always require their respective clients.
