i click the play button and nothing happens. The Nox app opens up but there is nothing in the window

I found I had an issue that is likely the same as yours. I encountered it in another GoG game as well but was able to find a solution to that game. As it turns out, the solution worked for this game as well.

You cannot use the Galaxy client to run the game. You must create a shortcut to the game application itself or go to the folder with the application (the folder that has the Nox.exe file).

From there, double-click the shortcut/application. After that, run the shortcut/application again.

That's it.

It should run but you must remember that now you have two Nox.exe programs running. When you exit out of the game, you have to bring up Task Manager and close down the other application. Otherwise, the application will continue to run and will consume computer resources.
