My problem is with trying to open Nox on windows 7 64-bit. The game installs fine, but when I go to run the game nothing happens. Clicking the shortcut or nox.exe doesn't even get me to the splash screen.

I've tried the following:
Uninstall, reinstall as administrator
Every compatibility mode
Run as administrator
Disable desktop composition
Disable visual themes
16-bit colour depth (both by changing display settings, and in the default.cfg file)
Run with only 1 core
Enabled/disable DEP
Update video drivers
Install old, then new versions of DirectX

For reference, my PC has an Intel Core 2 duo processor, and GTX 460 graphics card.
When I checked the boxes for Disable desktop composition and Disable visual themes, attempting to launch the game resulted in a black screen for about 3-4 seconds, but then straight back to desktop.

If anyone has any ideas on how to get this game to run, it'd be greatly appreciated. I've seen quite a few users having similar issues with the game, but whenever they find a solution they just post 'lol fixed it', rather than what they did to solve the issue.

I completed the game without problems on Win7 Pro 64 bit. Here's my setup:

Core i7 920
GTX 560 Ti
Several HDDs and two SSDs
6 GB RAM

Here's how I instaleld it:

Installed outside Programs (x86) or Programs. I installed to a completely separate drive from my OS drive. I have a separate dedicated games drive (drive E). If you don't have a separate drive available, install to a separate location from the Programs folders. Something like C:Games.

Ran the installer as Admin.

Once installed, right clicked the desktop shortcut and went to the Compatibility tab. Changed settings to Run in compatibility mode for WIn98/WinME.

For Settings, I checked 'Disable Visual Themes' and 'Disable Desktop Composition'.

Also checked 'Run this program as an administrator' so it always runs with admin privileges.

This allowed me to run the game without issues. Hope that helps you out.
I have Win 7 64-bit
Phenom II X4 840
Radeon HD 6800
8GB RAM
I've installed in separate folder than Program Files
I've tried all compatibility modes,
I've tried reinstall and run as admin
I've installed older DirectX (from support page)
I've updated my graphic card drivers
UAC is turned off

What I don't have is latest Windows 7 updates, I will install it and we will se if it's work, but for now is not.
Well, I've solved the problem, but not everyone will like my method. I've just reinstalled the system... Now NOX is working. Only issue is that my antivirus (avast) is reporting a trojan in NOX.exe.
Ok, so I finally got it to work.

The issue was with avast antivirus. It was detecting 'game.exe' in the NOX directory as a trojan, and immediately quarantining it without any notification. Thus by restoring game.exe and adding an exception, I was able to play the game without problems.

For those of you who are having trouble getting the game to launch, I suggest you check the folder you installed Nox to, and make sure game.exe is still there. So, the exact steps I followed to get it to work are:

Download setup via GOG downloader
Run setup (as administrator)
Install where you want it (mine was to default directory, I don't think this makes a difference)
When setup is complete, exit installer
Add an exception in your antivirus for the NOX directory, restore game.exe if it has already been quarantined.
Open shortcut in windows 98/ME compatibility mode, check boxes for disable visual themes, disable desktop composition, and run as administrator. These should be the default settings, but check if they aren't.

I just bought this game during EA promo, and I too am using a Windows 7 64 bit laptop (ASUS N55s). I have tried all that above, still couldn't run the game. What could I miss?

I tried all the above configurations, still doesn't work. My specs is
Asus N55SL
Intel Core i5-2450M
GT 635M (Nvidia Optimus) + Intel Intergrated
4 GB RAM

Does my problem running the game have anything to do with Nvidia Optimus?

It could be because of Optimus, yes (but other people have had issues with desktop cards too). I've got a GTX 660M + Intel HD 4000.
For me, the cutscenes don't show (only the sound are OK) and the main menu is a real mess. Oddly, I can't make the game run on Intel, whatever the Optimus setting, so at the moment there seems to be a flaw here in nVidia's driver.

So far I've found two solutions (one easy and the other more efficient but not so easy) :

- run the game in windowed mode by adding "-swindow" at the very end of the Target field of your shortcut (without quotes ; "-window" will create a full-screen fake window) + change your Desktop to 16bit colour mode before playing.

=> the game will run fine, apart from the cutscenes. The only way to watch the cutscenes (that I know of) is to use XCC AV Player. Note that there are just one intro + one outro per character.

OR

- use another ddraw.dll file, as apparently the game rely on this to run normally... The only one I've tried so far is from wineD3D.exe (download the installer here: http://www.nongnu.org/wined3d/ ). Unzip the installer (right click on it to do that, then "open" with your file archiver, like 7zip) and search for the following .dll files in $SYSDIR: ddraw.dll, wined3d.dll, libwine.dll (there are others in the third folder, but apparently it's for 64bit applications, you can try them though).
Put these files in the game folder.

=> Nox should run normally, except that there will be sound issues (crackling) in the main menu, and maybe a bit during the dialogues / loading. Loading times will be a bit longer too. Apart from that, the game runs fine, cutscenes included!

Here are two other links to ddraw wrappers, that may help or give better results (or break the game...):

http://bitpatch.com/ddwrapper.html

http://bitpatch.com/ie_ddrawfix.html (not sure this one will work at all)

You could also try the Application Compatibility Toolkit with "Force DirectDraw emulation".

Hope this helps!

Wow, thank you kindly, you've helped a lot!

I have read and already tried the windowed method before, it didn't work at all.

So I tried downloading the ddraw.dll file from the link you gave, and it worked! And it also had issues like you mentioned (cracking sound in the main menu, but the gameplay is okay, but didn't play that far, so didn't encounter long loading time yet. And I haven't tried ddraw wrapper yet, as the game is now playable for me, it is fine. Thank you again for your help. I've bookmark this page just so that I could view your post to follow your guide, in case I have to reinstall the game again in the future. Thanks again! :)
I had issues on Win7 with a 680GTX. What I did was set my desktop color depth to 16bit and that fixed Nox refusing to load. Nox is 16bit natively, so a 32bit desktop color depth makes it lock up.

Try this under Windows 7:

- Run Nox. This will start the processes NOX.exe and rundll32.exe
- Go to task manager and right click NOX.exe and select "End Process". (Do not select "End Process Tree") After doing that, rundll32.exe will keep running.
- Run Nox again.

Nox starts after the second run.
if you are using Windows XP, 7, 8 or newer you have to change the compatibility mode to WIN98 and then everything works fine, colors doesn't matter this is just and old game and it has to stay that way :)
I have windows 8.1 I believe. I have tried damn near everything sort of resetting my entire computer to factory settings and just downloading the new win updates. I have tried every compat setting and tried uninstalling and re-installing over and over again on different drives and in different folders. This is one of my favorites games, I grew up on it and I just want to play it with my brother. Can anyone help me figure out how to make it run. It either refuses to launch at all or does the strobe light. Any advice?

YOU ARE A GOD AMONG MEN! Thank you so much for the help because I have tried literally everything to get it to work and this really helps. For some reason, turning off emulated ddraw in the registry worked (must be a problem with that), but that made the game (and others like it) refuse to run at resolutions higher than 640x480. Instead, if I used your solution of forcing the game to use the Wine D3D implementation, it worked without any problems! It takes slightly longer to load the game up but it's worth it in the end since I can actually play it.

NOTE TO PEOPLE WHO FIND THIS POST LATER: You may have to download a slightly older version of the Wine D3D installer he linked to for extraction. The newest one didn't seem to have ddraw.dll included for some reason, so I just got the next one that did and followed the instructions. Works without a charm, and now I can even run it in the highest resolution!
any can hep me.
