I do:

- One base per galaxy. The first ten galaxies each get a base, after that I obviously have to spread out.

- All my planet bases are next to a portal. They also have all three types of resources, though after a while that rule gets relaxed. I do this by first finding a portal, then building a base next to it, then exploring the galaxy and finding good systems (many planets and/or moons), then teleporting to each of these through the portal at my base and checking favorable conditions there. Are there hotspots and what kind and class.

- The resources are well spread out, too, so I can have some of everything.

- I try to avoid aggressive sentinels, except for one base that has all its views blocked and where I can go sentinel hunting. The main building is high on a mountain far away from everything else, and there is a teleporter connected second building on the ground from which I can enter and leave the battleground.

- My build style is optimized for as little graphics lag as possible. I spread my bases out, using teleporters. I also no longer make a superbase with everything, but specialize bases more and more over time.

- The special base NPCs all end up on my freighter, out of the way somewhere, once their quests are finished.

I've only just started playing and don't really know what I'm doing so plopping them anywhere at this point, are there "natural" portals on some planets? I didn't know that. I've just been building a new one when I plop down a base, I've got a "main" base with all the equipment I currently can make and then smaller ones just for essentially using the teleporter and a refiner.

Tbh I'm not really a huge fan of the base building, I like exploring mostly and have just the minimum but that might change once I get board of exploring. Where there always bases in NMS?

I dont know. I own the game since 2020 or some such. It came out in 2016 if I remember correctly.

There was already very extensive base building in 2020 so I wouldnt be surprised if it was already in the game at release, or not much later than release.
I build a base on every planet in the Universe. Just kidding, but I build a lot of bases, mostly just resource mines that have the bare minimum. I swore I would stop building more than one base in the same system, then I came across a planet called Cokrot Major, I already had a base on a planet in that system, so now there are two. My bases are mostly near a resource hot spot of some kind. I like to scan for a energy hot spot, mark it with a beacon, then find at least one resource hot spot within range of the energy one. The base goes in between and I pipe the resource right up to the door . I no longer have a need to mine resources by hand for most things, but I make the rounds every so often to collect. I also build a base overlooking sentinel towers so I can run down there and shut it down or cause a big battle to ensue. If there are any large caverns near a base I put a short range transporter in the cave so I can get down there if I desire. I just started playing NMS about six months ago so I still have a lot to learn, but it is one of the most fun games ever made in my opinion.
You can only have 50 bases maximum, and I try to have only one base per galaxy, and only the more interesting galaxies.

Though last time I played I think I only managed to get to 20 galaxies or some such. I already had a complete set of everything thats mineable and various of my bases also had a complete garden setup, too.

Once you break the 4 billion monetary units limit it doesnt feel like theres much of a point to continue playing, so that was when I stopped the last time.

But if I ever find the motivation and more importantly also the time to continue playing, thats probably what I will do again.
