NMS.EXE is accessing your Microphone, if you have a laptop or a desktop Microphone / Headset, by default you are being listened to by the game. What for / When this started I dont know.

AFAIK there is no game setting for this.

And there is no warning we are being evesdropped.

I only found out because I alt tabbed out of the game and noticed the systray icon for the Microphone being used.

In Win 10 Privacy settings you can disable desktop Apps from accessing your microphone, but by default windows allows everything.

Hellogames???

Why has this been enabled without any warning.
Why is there no in game setting to disable it.

I imagine its probably multiplayer related for a future update, but implementing it on by default when the game currently doesn't need it for offline players?, and not providing any user control of it is a little bit shoddy.

I have submitted a report to the Hellogames Zendesk.

If anyone here is a member of Reddit, could you please spread the word, because the game certainly does not tell people about this.

Just tried it via GOG Galaxy, and there is a Network setting for "Speech to text" which could be the reason .. but I have that disabled, and normally play offline so even if thats all this is, why does the game still access the microphone.
Not an issue for me running this game on Win7 and Ubuntu?!
low rated
Well, Windows 10 already listens and monitors everything you do. Steam also does the same thing. What does it matter if someone else is now doing it? Is there something so important that it matters? Smart TV in your houses also record all conversations. Not sure if you ever worked with phone calls, but all those telemarketers, and phone calls you get that says your conversations will be recorded for prosperity, they record everything in the house. Not sure if you read the entire user agreement on your cell phones, but they record everything, and it says the information will be used at their discretion basically. What is one more thing that does it?

All of this and one video game bothers you at all?

Whereaminow25: Well, Windows 10 already listens and monitors everything you do.
If you allow it to yes, Cortana, Onedrive and Keyboard monitoring of various features are disabled on my devices, and the thing is it has options to turn everything off which may be a Privacy issue.
A click of the WIFI button makes it isolated, and Bleachbit clears all the history I want it to.

If you know of anything windows is doing despite whatever Privacy setting is supposed to turn off, which can be held up in a court of law, list them publicly.

Steam also does the same thing.
I do not have steam

Yes there is (which is none of your business), and other people with similar concerns should be warned and given options, not everyone is "click agree" happy sheeple. Professions such as Law, Medical, Caring, Military, Industrial etcetera .. All have good reasons to want to shield their privacy. Kids who buy games and play them in the living room of parents who are in such professions but haven't time to notice or even knowledge of what is happening in their vicinity.

Smart TV in your houses also record all conversations.
We avoid buying smart TVs, and I am well aware of the fact that some TVs have very well hidden microphones / cameras, samsung famously were taken to task about their practice of listening in to families without giving anyone any warnings that was the case. Our TV will never be allowed to connect to the internet.

Not sure if you ever worked with phone calls, but all those telemarketers, and phone calls you get that says your conversations will be recorded for prosperity, they record everything in the house. :D I think you meant posterity rather than prosperity, but prosperity is probably true too, market research using any devices capabilities is an advanced science these days.

The odd telemarketers that get our ex-directory land line number immediately get blocked with a device we have attached and we hang up.

Any mobile calls received which are not on our contacts just get ignored and blocked.

:) I once bought a Mobile phone from a high street store, and the assistant (obviously wanting to maximise the amount of shop floor sales versus time taken selling) commenced doing the setup of the phone .. and actually clicked the agree to T&Cs button for me. I stopped her there and told her to get the manager. When asked about if it is their companies policy to allow the customer to see the T&Cs of the device he said yes sir, so I got them to take back the phone already agreed to by the staff and give me a fresh one where I could read through the 300 pages first before clicking agree. I did not agree and walked out.

After finding out about all the things which can't be prevented on new mobile phones, and apps adding their own world of intrusions to the device which the device manufacturer can not be held responsible for (its in the T&Cs), I have since only bought phones with traditional Telephone calls, SMS Text, and no Internet connectivity allowed.

Parasites.

All of this and one video game bothers you at all?
Yes it does, and it should bother everyone, not just roll over and accept it.

My ISP does not allow you to change the default DNS Primary and Secondary server in their own provided Router, so that they get to study and sell your behaviour gathered from all of your devices going through the ISPs default DNS servers and get more money out of their customers use of the internet. I was not happy with that because all I am buying from them is a pipe to the internet .. So I bought and configured my own router to use DNS servers which I choose, and bypass the ISP slurping our data with encrypted connections.

I am pretty sure now the game is doing this just to enable the Speech to text feature of the game, but the thing is when that option is disabled the game is still engaging with the machines microphone.

Not sure how this works in Windows 10. A check to see if the microphone is active and working might register as "accessing microphone". So it might be less serious than you think, i.e. maybe a single check is causing this issue and no actual recording takes place.
If you know of anything windows is doing despite whatever Privacy setting is supposed to turn off, which can be held up in a court of law, list them publicly.
Maybe I'm getting old but this is exactly what happened when the Snowden leaks were released in 2013. Nothing happens, Microsoft can hide behind the law, the law can hide behind a national security theatre. We/ve got the CIA boss James Clapper lying to congress, nothing happens. MS can record all your key presses, record your microphone and watch you through a webcam all they want while swearing they don't do this and they will get away with it. Disabling Cortana or whatever does not help you.

You want to keep some of your well earned privacy? Run Linux for your daily work and keep an offline Windows PC for gaming. Works fine for me.

Privacy is at the heart of a liberal democracy. You from the Netherlands? Congratulations. No need to worry, then.

EDIT: Kudos to alternity for bringing this up. :D
