I can't find a way to actually make a profit buying the station's starred goods from the traders and selling them to the station. Everything I've looked at, the traders are selling at about 5x resale value, and the station's only offering me around 2x (I lost 20,000 units trying to flip suspension fluid the first time before I realized what had happened). Does this only work with rarer commodities?

As far as I have seen there is no real trading in the game, to get money you just mine and then sell.
I think there was some talk about a running economy in the universe but it seem to be another of those things that got cut.
But according to IGN's guide, you should be able to do this. Under the circumstances, I can't tell whether it's a glitch or whether it doesn't work for more common goods.
Here is the fastest way to make money I have found:

Build a Theta upgrade that require gravitino balls (e.g. the Plasma Cannon cooling system Theta). Now disassemble it. You will now have a stack of 5 gravitino balls, which allows you to stack them up to 100.

Now find a planet with with gravitino balls. Run around, and collect them (since you can stack them now, you should be able to collect a lot at once). If you have something like the personal shield upgrade Theta, you can just ignore the Sentinels. They may hit you a couple of times but they shouldn't be dangerous enough to kill you.

Sell you crap load of gravitino balls at some trading terminal for ~30.000 units each. This way, you can make a couple of million credits in an hour easily.

Yeah there's no way to tell how much something costs in different systems. You can keep your stuff and hope that it'll be worth more in the next system. That's about it *shrug*

It would be nice if we could at least see how much our stuff is worth in the next two systems or something like that.
I`m a terrible merchant, in real life or games, so never bothered with it.

Instead I found some alien sac pod things and just harvested them, while dodging the silly sentinels. Give an hour and I had a couple of million already. Always nice when I figure a way to make cash without needing to look up anyone else`s idea- Or trade. :)

I have 6 mill now, but when I went to buy a nicer ship was shocked to see some going for 24 million. I got a long way to go yet.

Yea, ship prices are ridiculous. A 48 slot ship will cost you well over 100 mil.
I think there must be a Gek starship cartel at work or something. :)
Got 27 million of units through trading alone (after spending my last unit for ship and suit).

How:

- shielded ship and exo suit
- upgraded tool (grenades!)

Land on a landing pod at a trader, scan the area and look out for green rectangles with a white exclamation mark.
If you are lucky you'll find
- albumen pearls, sells for roughly 30.000 each, found in and around caves
- vortex cubes, sells for 30.000 each, found in and around caves
- gravitino balls, sells for almost 30.000 each, found lying on the ground
Fill your suit the first time, transfer to ship, fill your suit the second time - walk back to ship/trader, rinse and repeat - because if the items can be found, they come in numbers!

Now for the trading part: it makes sense to look out for the rate at wich the items can be sold: they vary from trader to trader. Sometimes it pays to warp to another planet.

And, because these items are listed as "extremely rare" >>> watch out for sentinels, even in caves.

Good luck ...

I haven't traveled far enough to find the good stuff. I gotta get out more!

I managed to do this for neutrino modules (and thanks for the tip, it was very helpful), but I haven't got any techs that require gravitino balls. I don't even have a plasma cannon as far as I know. Are finding new techs just a matter of getting closer to the center? Because the past 200 or so techs I've found have been ones I already had. I don't recall when I last found something new.
When I go to a system I try to find something that I can build that, that also is sale-able in the system. One system it was unstable plasma for 53,000. It took 200 Plutonium and 400 Thamium9 to build. I made millions doing that. I have 11 million now, not even close to enough for an upgrade ship, and don't seem to be able the get many crashed ships. Only found 3. I have been trying the transmission trick but never get sent to a place where they show crashed ships, just more blueprints I already have. So I probably will have to buy a bigger ship, which is out of this world expensive.
Don't waste money buying ships. Upgrade for free getting crashed ships on planets.

It's a question of how much patience you have, and how far you've gotten. Early on, using some of the available farming techniques, you can relatively quickly gather enough money to buy a ship with 5+ more slots than your current one. Crashed ships always have at most 1 slot more than your current one (as far as I know), meaning that you will need to find and repair 5+ crashed ships to get as many more slots.

Doesn't look like anyone mentioned this but the starred goods are wanted by a station, not in surplus at a station.

To put it another way, you want to be selling the starred goods, not buying them.

Currently the system i'm in has a planet full of Gravitino Balls, the planet isn't high security so i don't have to worry about sentinels. And the icing on the cake is that the station in-system has starred (wants) Gravitino Balls. I make a hair under 100k per ball.
Two nights ago I was on a station and the Gek Statue was starred and I could sell them for 55k and change. I started talking to every trader that came through and bought their statues for around 22k. I made over 500k profit before I decided I wanted to explore more.

I keep a pad of paper near my keyboard and write down prices at the terminals of various high price items and then wait for NPCs to land (I do this both at stations and trading posts).
