I just finished it today, I'm interested in knowing how others found it. Its not really my kind of story, the whole heavy sci-fi multiple dimensions, simulated galaxy, with a god like computer failing to keep it all in check but overall I'm glad I played through it.

The exploration, vastness and variety of worlds is really the appeal to me.
NMS is a game where you get the best equipment and build lots of bases, only to hit at some point the ceiling and realize that while you can do this endlessly into the future, there is really nothing really left to do.

Last time I played the ceiling happened when I broke the 32 bit limit for money (4 billion).
When the game launched, the story was just a post-modernist joke: "It's all pointless. Hee-hee!" Clearly, the story has been improved considerably, just like the rest of the game.

I quite like what the story has become. It reminds me of old sci-fi short stories - both in concepts that are explored and in brevity. What I find most remarkable is how well the story ties in with the multi-player experience.

What I took away as the main point of the story is this: The purpose of the player (the traveller) is to view and enjoy the wonders of the universe.

Yeah, for sure. It'd certainly fit into an episode of startrek imo (the earlier ones)
I would guess this would be around four episodes of material.

Maybe two if you really only have one scene after the other only driving the story.

Its not practicable though because core elements of the story wouldnt fit outside the specific No Man's Sky setting, which fundamentally is incompatible to Star Trek.
