I know some games where updating might break a savegame, like Empyrion does.

What about this game? I started my first savegame in 2.14 and i'm still playing 2.14, should i update the game to 2.16 or isn't that recommended?

Updates are generally okay. The only thing to be careful about is using a save from the experimental branch on the release branch. IIRC, there are specific warnings from Hello Games that doing so may break things.

Updating / patching if you're only using the release branch, such as 2.14 to 2.16, should cause no problems. It's not a bad idea to backup the saved games folder before installing an update, just in case.
