So in Foundation the fastest way to grind units was farming mordite for lubricant. What is the fastest way to get units, nanites and resources in Pathfinder?

MORE SLOTS = MORE PROFIT

In Foundation the fastest way to make money was getting crashed ships with more slots as fast as possible and buying/selling Resonators or Aquaspheres which both yield the largest profit in few time. Then still you must find buyers wich buy stuff at +100% and log the location (or remember). Same NPC/location = Same prices

Now crushed ships are more difficult. I still don't know if you get money back by buying a ship with smaller slots (I guess not), so what you need to do:

- Find a crash site, but don't go there immediately (don't leave system)
- Go to your freighter and buy the smallest ship possible, use it to go to the crash site
- Go to the crash site and toggle ships, sell your ship for the smallest available
- Repeat...

This should make you some profit fast.
The problem with crashed ships is now that you need to repair a lot of slots, and you no longer get upgrades for free. That means no direct profit anymore. I think if you need to repair a 30+ slot ship you are going to spend some pretty millions...It's pointless to go to a crash site with a 'good' ship, because it's never worth toggling ships I think.

The fastest way to get Nanites (which are nothing else than bitcoins IMO) is to kill sentinels, I think they have even reduced the Alert Level time. By doing so you get a lot of Zink and other stuff too that is worth selling. But you need a large exosuit.

you won't do profit indefinitly, the limit is at 2.2 Billion or so.

Can you actually SELL ships on a trader now? I haven't tried it, so I honestly don't know. However, I do know that your comment about not getting a refund when trading to a smaller, less-well-equipped ship is correct. If the value of your ship exceeds the value of the ship you're trading for, the trade is free... but you don't get any money back.

If you can't sell excess ships on a trader, you could still fly the salvaged ship back to your freighter, break down all the upgrades, and use the empty, stripped-down hull with broken slots as a trade-in on your next small ship. I'm not sure how profitable that would be, but it seems like it MIGHT be a way to get money out of a wrecked hull instead of just letting it rust on the planet's surface.

You are right, that was too nice to be true: you cannot sell your ships, meaning you can trade in the value of your ship but you have to SPEND money anyway - and no, you won't get money back so my system above is only good for not spending too much for a new ship, but therefore you cannot make any profit with ships. I think that's exactly what the devs want to achieve.

What remains to check is: what is cheaper, say you have a ship with 10 functional slots + 10 slots to repair, then you repair all slots; OR: you go buy directly a 20-slot ship and trade-in your 10+10 (assuming the new ship is mostly identical). This maybe counting peanuts but these slots are quite expensive...

I cannot say for certain with ships, but I did do that exact test for a multi-tool... and the entire value of the multi-tool after I repaired all the broken slots was actually less than the amount I spent fixing it.

The moral of the story: Let the next owner worry about it. Caveat Emptor

[edit] Actually that's a very realistic situation, though. e.g. When selling a house, if you invest money to fix a problem, it almost never increases the value of the house by as much as you have to spend to fix it. You're almost always better off giving the buyer a credit towards the price and letting them fix it instead.
