So I have been breathlessly waiting for this game like so many people, and here we are post release, and can I think summarize my experience thus far on one word:

Confused.

I am having fun, but the game feels really fragmentary like dozens of fantastic ideas done 80% of the way to complete.

Examples:
Resources on planets: Even Mass Effect has rudimentary planetary scans looking for resources, or old old games like Star Flight. (anyone else remember that one?) You could scan from orbit, see what was on the planet and then decide if if was worth it to land and hunt it out.

NMS thus far, I have the solar system scanner, which doesn't ID asteroids 10 meters off my bow, but will spot a random land feature/building/resource from literally 10 milllion miles away, yet doesnt actually ID what it is. As I am crafting (I will get to that UI in a minute) and need specific materials, being able to scan from orbit and see even a rough estimate of what was on the planet before I landed would be amazing.

Ships and upgrades - Granted, the UI is the same across tool/suit/ship, but what wierd UI for storing items, building upgrades or work with inventory. Its possible to move resources around inside each storage area, but upgrades cannot, even just to restack the sort order to make the listing cleaner? Just wierd.

New ships:: So.. I just spent 1 something mill on a new ship.. and got nothing for my previous one? Really? No materials, turn in credits, nothing? The old ship just apparently vaporizes.. odd. Let alone the barter screen if you refuse to buy a ship after inspection, dumps you out of the conversation UI entirely, so if you still want to buy or sell materials, you have to talk to the alien again.

Suit UI, or walking around - Did I miss the manual somewhere? Through guesswork and just seeing what happens when I get hit, fall, exposed to weather, radiation etc I have figured out MOST of the symbology on the suit HUD, but man is that a rough start. No explanation whatsoever, and there are STILL some I have no clue of what they mean.

Scanning for resources with the suit helps, but mouse over on some things like bulidings or (?) will give you an estimated time to target, but doing the same for resources wont? Doesn't make sense. I have also seen locations of interest, not throw up the (?) whatsoever when I fly over them, or even walk up to them, but then again will do so a moment later.

Speaking of flying: Wow flight controls are funky.. long long long long time flight and space flight sim guy here, Xwing vs Tie anyone? I could even throw down the entire Wing Commander series starting from the very first. Flight controls in atmosphere and in space are wonky to say the least. Sometimes at [press w] to launch, instead of flight, I get a ballistic missile shot straight back into space.. just crazy but I assume it is a bug. The rest of the time the flight is oddly sluggish, rolls are wierd, landing sequences are hit and miss at best. Good luck trying to actually land on a landing pad of a ground trading station, as you cannot see, have no approach vector and just guess.

Space flight isnt much better.. I am on a 3rd ship now and it drives like a whale in mud, though there is no way to be able to TELL that when you buy a new ship. The only characteristics we get are inventory space and what modules are preinstalled. Side note.. the sellers are JERKS.. love how they sell their ships with no fuel whatsoever, and you cannot move over what fuel you have, and for warp power, that really sucks.

Space stations: Stating the obvious, absolutely identical on the inside... really too bad.

Maps in general... lets break this into three sub sections:
planetary maps - no mapping feature.. really??!! A beacon will give you a brief top down look from almost orbit, but it doesnt save or store any of that info, and is essentially useless. The beacon and ship markers on the compass are the only thing that keeps probably all of us from getting helplessly lost forever.

Solar system maps - again.. really.. no map? No zoom in or out, no distant view to actually see the star system you are in and how it is laid out or the best way to navigate around in it? Just blind spnning, mashing C to "scan" and wondering what you might find;.

Galactic map - oh man.. where is the zoom OUT feature. Free look just lets you bounce from system to system, but yet no scan of each star system, no way of seeing number of planets or sense of context. Also zero ability to zoom out to even a quadrant view, and see more of where you are in the systems. Where is that massive pull back fade that was in the promo vids?

Submitting scan results - There really needs to be a SEND ALL button when turning in scanned items, places and critters for credits. Going through an entire planet full, with the same voice over again and again and again is enough to make me already run with my sound turned down. There needs to be a revamp of this UI.

Lastly graphics.. I have been lucky thus far and not had any of the launch or severe graphic stutter issue others are seeing. SSD and new nvidia 1080 probably crush those issues under pure horsepower. That said, I am still seeing odd graphic artifacts. Mine off an entire towering gold node for example, walk away.. come back.. and the (now former node) will flicker back into place for a moment even though I tore it all down. Doesnt happen all the time but definitely 5+ times in hours of play. Also, the really odd tiny fragments left hanging is just weird.. we have debris from mining that reacts to basic physics, but you can but the bottom off an entire node and leave it hanging in the sky. That isnt graphics per se, but graphics engine, but still weird.

So yeah.. and this is just the start.

I have high hopes for this game.. and still do! Hoping for the big patch that is coming will make more changes, and that there can be more to come. I think the game has MASSIVE potential, but at this point, it feels incomplete.
I've been enjoying it with ZERO problems that others are experiencing. There are a few immersion issues, like when landing on a planet some of the planet (closer up) is detailed and further away is pixelated, like when google maps has some detailed areas and others are not.

The only actual issues I have seen thus far is one crash to desktop, and then the weird random launch from a landing zone, occasionally blasts me straight into orbit.

I have been really enjoying my game but there are some good points here...

1.I`ve noticed my ship sometimes shootoff into space when just taking off. Always wondered if maybe I did something wrong.

2.The space stations do need spicing up. Even with just random aliens walking around except just-you.

3. Good points on scanning rocks in space.

4. I`ve noticed the weirdness with the graphics of some rocks reappearing. Had a giant pillar of gold appear. I mined it totally until it was gone, but every time I moved away from it to some distance, it would re-appear, then vanish when I got close.

As for the rest of it, not a huge problem. I`m happy with the space flight (and I played the old wing commander games too). You just gotta go easy on the controls and speed and turn to where the indicator arrows show. Double arrows is the closest bogey. Once you get behind him, slow a bit and shoot. The ship`s computer auto-tracking does the rest. If I can take 2 or 3 down alone, you can too.

I found the suit very easy to understand.

Thank you for the excellent review raichen. I can't get it to run but it is good to read a detailed review. Much appreciated.
Good review. I'm enjoying the game but those criticisms are spot on. I don't think space combat is that bad though. Admittedly, I haven't done a lot of it. It looks like there's no benefit to destroying enemy ships (no resources or anything) so I'm going to try to avoid combat for now.

I haven't bought a new ship yet so now I'll be prepared to get nothing from my starter ship. What happens to ship upgrades when purchasing a new ship?

So at this point from trolling the huge REDDIT forum, dont buy ships.

On any given planet, look for the orange beacons.
craft and use a chip to use the beacon
Search for communications
Search or keep searching until you get communications tower.
Fly to the tower and solve the riddle (usually math related, and pretty obvious, worst case its 1 in 3 to guess it right and if not reload)
Get the location for a crashed ship.
Crashed ships are almost always +1 storage unit over what you have now.. find the ship, repair the pulse drive and launch ONLY to be able to fly it.
Rinse and repeat.

Regarding upgrades.. unbelievably, you CANNOT move over upgrades, and will have whatever the other ship has by default. That said, as you investigate wrecked ships, you can get the warp drive improvements without having to build them if it has it already. Being unable to move upgrades from your ship, or the multitool either as well, is insane.

I have like a like a 26 or 26 slot ship now just by doing that. Granted, very slow, but I hear the max 48 slot ships are over 100mil credits.

Back to review:

I am now like 7+ more hours in.. and the lack of a working scanner is really killing it. You should be able to scan from the solar system, from orbit, and from your ship flying over. You should be able to get a general readout of materials on a planet from orbit and then decide if it is worth it to go mining.

Basically completely rebuilding the scanning functionality and UI would make this 100x better alone. Be able to scan the star system next door, get a ROUGH estimate of size and layout, possible materials etc. If you are in system its much more specific scanning the planets remotely, and so on getting better the closer you get.

Obviously I have put a ton of time into the game thus far, hit like 4 atlas stations (huh? ZERO explanation of plot or even what is going on would make this more relevant) and a dozen planets or so.

I honestly want to help with this game.. I wish had been in on the beta and I believe it COULD be so so so very much better, and would have loved to have built up a relationship and line of communication with the Devs. I am still hping that coming patches and DLC will polish the !#$!@#!@ out of this, as it is like a diamond, still encased in the rock, under 10 tons of dirt.. an we dont have a working scanner!

Candidly, everything feels half done.

Well Ive discovered that Space Stations ARE different. If you go to a different system owned by a different race. A lot of things change, you even start getting pretty bad storms.

I don`t have such a big problem with not being able to scan a planet from space. I suspect it`s done to make you go and explore the planet. If you want, do a `Star Trek` and reason that atmospheric conditions such as storms or the ozone layer is preventing the scanners from reading the surface of planets and picking up resources. May be they haven`t figured an invention that can penetrate those conditions.

And to be honest, should we be able to pick up every resource of a planet from the atmosphere or space? Wouldn`t it be easier if you`re on the ground close? Technology may not be as advance as we always like to think- in the future.

Thanks raichean, I'll try that out.

Do you know if there's any way to tell how much an item is worth in another system? I know the galactic average is displayed when buying & selling but it would be nice if I could at least see how much those items are worth in the next system to see if I can get a better deal.

I agree with you but that's not what raichean said. He wants to be able to scan the planet from the ship to see if it's even worth going down there.

No way that I am aware of.. even the alien ships landing at a station may have slightly different prices on things than the station itself.

All excellent points, but as is the "scanner" feels broken about 75% from space and in flight, and about 15% broken on the ground. Scanner in space can pick up a building on another planet.. scanner in flight does almost nothing. The ground scanner isnt bad but needs some tweaks.

So basically, knowing the galactic average is pretty worthless if we don't know which systems have better prices. This is such a basic functionality of any space trading game that I'm surprised they left it out.

I'll check on the Steam forums even though it's a wretched hive of villainy and scum right now.

I LOVED Star Flight!!!

However, I have to agree on the ship steering, it steers like a 1965 Ford Galaxy 500 LTD that my Grandfather used to have.
I think you can upgrade maneuverability to make the steering better, have you tried this? And if you have, does it still suck?

yup you can have to get the tech for it... i have this tech

crazy amount of stuff can be upgraded. wish more and more ... AND MORE :)

Yes you can and yes it gets better.

It really is just patience, people.
