Since this game has an option to choose difficulty (1 year ago?) I've been trying to get a starting 'chill exploration' planet now and then.
I try it about 10 times, watch the unskippable super annoying intro sequence over and over again and find myself in hostile environment. Heat, Frost, Toxic and/or Radioactive is there to kill you. Then I logout disappointed waiting for the NEXT ;-) update.

It seems nothing has changed. Am I doing something wrong or do I simply have to deal with deadly environmental starting planets?

I have nothing against difficulty but I simply want to discover this game at my own pace, preferrably in that 'chill exploration experience' they are talking about.
The point in starting you off in a hazardous planet is to try and push you off the planet so you have the tools needed to explore at your own pace.

honestly, in classic, Hazards do not pose much of a problem in the starting zone, just make sure to pick up some sodium
My starting planet was so awesome, that by the time all that crap at the start disappeared I was nearly dead. Seems I spawned right in the middle of something that was killing me fast. Noticing everything had changed, I didn't even know what I was meant to farm and just gave up then and there. I look forward to starting a survival game.

I haven`t played for a LONG time. I wanted to do the Iron man game, but decided to do the `relaxed` version to get back into the swing of things.

Found myself on a frost planet which ate through my suit really fast and I started dying while I was desperately trying to understand what did what. I didn`t even find out how to go 1st person before I was dead!

Relaxing indeed... a bit too relaxing!

I wish that we had a creative mode II in which you can build unfettered, yet still be required to gather resources and money! As it can get quite boring when you're done building that fortress in the sky you've always wanted! As it stands I only use creative mode as a sketch in how I want my fortress to be in the normal mode...

I'm wondering if you can share your base made from creative mode as that would be an excellent motivator to keep playing in that mode!
TY for the replies everyone!

Especially the intro (Spacesuit bootup check, robotvoice) takes alot of time. I understand it's part of starting a new game, but it get's very annoying if you are creating new games to find a decent planet because you're unable to exit before the bootup check is completed.

And tbh I don't want to leave my starting planet asap. I'd like to discover things, hazardous environments are kind of ruining it.
iirc the starting planets before last year's patch were less hostile. I spent hours into the game, on multiplle starting planets, having a true chill exploration experience. When night came it became dangerous (cold), or maybe acid rain but I could spend time in a cave. But starting planets weren't this agressively hazardous as now.

Anyway with this new patch I want to start a new game despite the hazards, I'm too curious how it has changed. I'll try to make a few more new games and pick the best.

Started a game yesterday under 1.5 and the normal mode put me on a planet that was anything but hostile--didn't own the game before yesterday, so can't attest to an experience like yours. Yes, I should think that starting the player in an environment that won't immediately kill him would be a desirable starting point for any game...;)

Yep, as soon as I had my parts I left that miserable rock!

But they tampered with the base building/repairs by mandating a shit-ton of foraging for resources... I say foraging as you'll have to ninja-mine for materials due to the shitty rotten fuckin' sentinels now, as those pricks actually spawn near you at random intervals making mining a pain in the fuckin' ass if you're not into battling all the time!

I blame the HCRpg crowd for pissing about the difficulty being too easy and not an adrenaline-fueled-mining-for-days-fest for this as well as HG for accommodating them by ruining the normal game when they could have devv'd this for hard mode...

Thankfully, it seems we can still mod and I for one will be looking into a way to increase the yields/building/repair costs via a mod.

agree they should make first planet's bit easier but have gotten some pretty tame ones, luck of dice roll i guess so keep trying !
The problem isn't actually the planet difficulty but the fact that they start you with under 20% of your environment bar used up. Once/if you find a cave and can recharge the bar fully the rest should be easy so long as the planet isn't *too* hostile. I don't understand the reasoning behind starting you off with very little of your bar remaining. Yes I die often because I can't find a cave for shelter at the very beginning and it is rather stupid.
Also keep in mind when that info was first posted (about the 'normal mode chill experience') it was just after the update that included 'Survival' mode, and at that time 'Normal' was indeed a chill experience.

Hello Games have bitten off more than they can comfortably chew with NMS so i would take a wager that they simply have not looked/thought about updating the game descriptions to better reflect the new changes in NEXT.

I also would not expect it to be changed anytime soon, as they seem busy with lots of other stuff!

Post NEXT, maybe Normal is the new Survival mode and Survival is the extra hard Survival mode? I guess that would leave Creative as the 'chill experience'?
Play Survival. After that you will definitely think normal is chill.

Survival is rough. I just survived starting and fixing my ship, then landed on a planet with Hostle Sentinels which immediately attacked. Couldn`t take off, no fuel. They will not stop until you are dead.
