Hi.

I tried getting NMS:Beyond to work with my Oculus Rift. No dice. It seems to require SteamVR. Which requires me to create an account with Steam in order to download and install their client, which then would enable me to download SteamVR.

How about pointing this out on the store page ? Unless someone comes up with a different solution, of course.

Edit: No, OpenComposite doesn't do the trick. You have to have SteamVR installed. OpenComposite was the first thing I tried.

This. This is the reason why I, despite being super interested, excited and willing to spend money on VR, I'm still without any kind of VR. It requires an account and software from Steam (or Facebook...? IDK how the Rift works.)

I have neither, and don't plan on creating either of them.
So that's 1k that remains unspent, I guess...
Oculus have their own store and ecosystem. Oculus does not require a Facebook account. But of course they're trying to get people to sign in with Facebook. For convenience. The convenience of Mr Zuckerberg and his shareholders. For my convenience, I ocassionally leave the network plug in for a few minutes when playing VR, and record the Oculus' traffic for later analysis (and I switch off their services, if I don't use VR ...).

With SteamVR providing a unified API for games to use VR devices of different vendors, I'm not surprised Hello Games decided on using it.

What I'm surprised about, though, is that the GoG store page does not mention, that VR in NMS is _exclusive_ to Steam customers (last I know, as written above).

A small hint would do. Nothing too embarrassing.
'' Playing the current version of No Man's Sky in VR requires SteamVR, which needs to be acquired from Steam.'

That would probably save a few people a bit of time.

If you're interessted in more first-hand non-hype info on the Oculus and its software, feel free to ping me.I've gone through a few ups and downs with this wonderful piece of junk.

BTW: I bought 'The Solus Project' on GoG. Works great in VR with Oculus. No SteamVR required.
Thank you for the Information. I have the game for Steam and I would love to buy it here and play it without Steamwebhelper.exe's. Unfortunately I can not justify purchase if I still have to run it with steam in VR. I likewise have a Rift in use it in Win 7.
Fuck steam's over-priced VR, it's really stupid to mandate steam VR when there are several VR options out there, pretty fuckin' stupid indeed; what a disappointment, thanks for the heads up!

SteamVR here means the Steam VR software that is open-source and widely used, not the Index or Vive headset.

SteamVR is not Open Source. The OpenVR SDK is, which allows developing VR applications using SteamVR. SteamVR is the binary-only, closed-source runtime used by OpenVR. To my current knowledge, SteamVR can not be obtained without becoming a customer of Steam.
