I stopped playing NMS for many months so I misted all the updates, now I want to start again. How is the MP situation with the GOG Version right now? I read that at the beginning the MP was not available.

Trying to find out how it is going to work for GOG players. Will we be able to play alongside Steam players or will we be playing strictly amongst ourselves?

Well, from the way you put the question you're probably not aware that we are approaching a major update, the NEXT update, that should be released in due course. Whether GOG will get this update - I don't know if anything specific has already been said about that. This big update, however, is expected to bring the MP stuff that wasn't working before - like with the stargates - and more.

Funnily the game's homepage which I would regard the primary source of information is down right now :D (https://www.nomanssky.com/) I'm also behind in information so I wanted to take a look before talking too much BS.

I guess we will know more if and when the update arrives. Ah! There you go. Release date - at least for Steam and the new console platforms - is 24th July. (From the official Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/NoMansSky/)

My biggest fear are any breaking changes regarding game saves. I've played several hundred hours and I certainly do not want to lose my progress!

So if they still love GOG the update should hit us about 1-2 days after the Steam release. Then we'll have a clearer picture of what is going on.

it is the "same universe" but not Multiplayer - GOG has NO multiplayer at all as of now. They want to do it "later this year" but if they manage to get multiplayer working i am pretty sure it will NOT be crossplay with Steam.

Dying Light owners can't play with Steam owners. I expect the same problem with this.

Welp then it's time to consider NMS on GOG as a total loss for me.

I guess I have to swallow my pride and get it while it is on sale on Steam. This was a valuable lesson I guess. It's a shame because generally I like GOG but this has left a sour taste.
