At some point recently I inadvertently set a waypoint in the Galactic map. Which would be okay except that now the default route when opening the map is towards the waypoint rather than towards the center of the galaxy. So, extra keystrokes to aim properly and the chance I'll head the wrong way if I'm not paying attention (i.e., the damned cat is on the keyboard again).

I don't need the waypoint, don't want it, and want to get rid of it. I don't even know where it's pointing to, except that it is certainly many warps and black hole jumps away. So, pretty useless.

Any ideas? I"ve seen some references here to editing the encrypted saved game file. Is that the only way?

Yes it's possible but rather complicated and you need the nomanssave tool v. 1.1. The waypoint is defined by this entry:

"VoxelX":-1412,"VoxelY":5,"VoxelZ":1082,"SolarSystemIndex":21,"PlanetIndex":0},"Type"
{"GalaxyWaypointType":"User"},...

Just open the save file with Notepad++ or UltraEdit and search for "User" with the quotes. Problem is; I used this to re-direct the waypoint to a system I visited before so it will pop-up in the map, but this is useless now because implemented (chose waypoint in the Discovery menu). I know that if no player waypoint is selected then the entry above will NOT be in the savefile, but I have no idea how much you need to take out, and it's too dangerous anyway, this may scew-up your save and cause other oddities.

Else, there is no direct way to delete a waypoint, but in-game you easily switch with Q/E the different waypoint categories, but ok, that's exactly what you don't want...I don't know any other solution, also because if you make a wrong waypoint you just correct it with another waypoint (will delete the previous one).

Oddly enough, I was unable to set more than one waypoint using the new method of right-clicking on the star in the discovery menu ( "p" menu ). Also, whenever I've actually traveled to a location where I had set a waypoint, the waypoint was deleted.

So it would seem that one possible way to completely delete this waypoint that you accidentally set on the other side of the galaxy somewhere would be to simply wait until the next time you're ready to warp to a new star, select the star you want to travel to and set a waypoint there, and then jump.

If it works as planned, the moment you set the waypoint on the destination star, the old waypoint will get deleted in favor of the new one, and the moment you arrive at the destination star, the new one will get deleted as well...

If that doesn't work, you can use the method XenonS mentioned, and set the VoxelX, VoxelY, VoxelZ, SolarSystemIndex, and PlanetIndex values to a star that's very near where you currently are (you can find a set of coordinates to a near star by looking in the section marked "TeleportEndpoints", assuming you've used the teleporter). Once you've changed the coordinates of the waypoint that is "many warps and blackhole jumps away" to someplace nearby, it should be easy to just go there and let the game delete it safely. But try the other method first, since manually editing your save does have a certain amount of risk.
it's possible to re-locate yourself and your ship into ANY known system, but this has nothing to do with waypoints, but has to do with your current system coordinates, and this is easy.

Still you need the nomanssave v.1.1 tool to re-encrypt the savefile once you have modified it. Your system coordinates are written in the very first line of the save file, just replace it with another known system coordinate. Then some weird things will happen, but you can overcome them. Here an extract of my notes:

------------------------------------------------
How to teleport to a specific system
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The regular (non-cheating) way is to mark a system as a waypoint like described above and fly there normally, or you would use the Teleport system of a space station to teleport you back to your home base and from there to the last 4 systems you have visited. But you can just re-locate anywhere by simply changing your current location in your save file (in the first lines of the save) with any system coordinate you want. When reloading the save you will then be located in that system, but some weird things will happen: You will often be just outside of the space station but also ouside of your ship floating in space and moving away from your ship at more or less fast speed! This means that after loading the save, you must go inside your ship IMMEDIATELY: Use the mouse quickly to face your ship, point to it and press and hold E. You should then get inside. If you miss your ship, reload the same save and try again. Missing your ship will make you drift away in the infinity of space! It's fun to watch but you cannot continue playing so you must reload the save...With some little training you should succeed getting in your ship.
------------------------------------------------
Here is what you need to replace in the savefile in the very first lines:

"VoxelX":-1412,"VoxelY":5,"VoxelZ":1082,"SolarSystemIndex":21,"PlanetIndex":0

You will have to copy-paste from another save with the coordinates you want (or one you have logged before), Then you need to run the savegame tool to re-encrypt the savefile (otherwise NMS will crash at start).
Oh, needless to say that you should backup all your saves before messing with these values...

Ha! Brilliant, that did the trick. Thanks!

Xenon, thanks for the pointer but I'm super cautious about messing up the current progress (WAY too many hours invested ;-). Plus I'm trying to do this mod- and tweak-less.

I even felt guilty about putting off installing 1.23 while trying to get a good deal on a freighter. Shouldn't have bothered -- best deal (so far) was a 26-slot "Star Destroyer" class for 0 units after helping out with a pirate attack afterinstalling 1.23. So much for trying to game the system (no pun intended (ha)).

Right, and in fact from 1.22 there is no more reason to use edition tools they have included a lot of features.
