I've been trying to add some stuff to my previously built base:

I couldn't place the the storage module anywhere, the outline was red, then accidentally I hovered it over an electric cable, I thought ok it needs power so that makes sense and placed a cable to where I wanted it to be. After I placed the 5 slot giant down, it wasn't connected to power and required to be plugged in still. After that I tried the medium furnace and it kept saying "must be attached to structure" when I'm inside the said structure, can't place it outside, inside, in the capital ship etc.

So are bases screwed at the moment or am I doing something wrong?

Edit: I've been following the quests etc to get the research tables and what not, I ran into the NPCs I'm supposed to hire, literally all of them spawned at the first space station I was sent to right off the bat but still no hireling stations anywhere... I know there are research places inside the anomaly but you can't craft basic stuff like the microprocessors. Base quest just refuses to progress, is it FUBAR or am I missing something?

I started a fresh new game with this update and have not gone back to my old save to see how things go. I think it's best you start a new game. However, with that said, I have also been having some issues building storage. I did the quest where I got the blueprints and placed Storage 0 right against the outside wall of my custom base (not a prefab room). Then I wanted to put Storage 1 right next to it...and it's listed as invalid. In fact I had to build it several feet away from my base walls. So much for a nice layout. I wonder if it might have something to do with the specialist consoles and teleporter on the other side of the wall somehow causing placement issues. But that doesn't explain why I have to move it further away...
No, don't bother. I did star a new game, 14h in now. My base repeatedly and irregularly is just empty and missing stuff when I return to it. Straight up, windows gone, switches, wired lights, and even the construction desk with the dude, all missing. My base was effectively empty. The wires were still there, but the lamps and everything went poof.

Don't bother with your base. Slap down a stupid room with a door and put the mission requirements in it. Don't do anything more than that. It's a mess.

yeah pretty much what I've been doing, keeping everything bare bones trying to get the specialist tables etc no idea why bthe base quest doesn't progress though aren't you supposed to get the NPC hiring quest from the base?
I just had my base contents disappear while I was there! I loaded up my game with my custom base (not using the prefab rooms) and everything was there. I then went into the one circular pre-fab room (because the galactic trade module won't work in a non-prefab room) and as I was there, the door and trade module vanished. I had to replace the door and I walked a few steps to my base, and it was empty - for the fourth or fifth time.

Well, that's that... I'm holding off on building any more base items until things are worked out. Plus the whole wiring thing is ugly, too... <sigh> Base building is the only part of the update that I do not like.
And I just found a repeatable bug that causes my base items to disappear...

I have a cylindrical pre-fab room with a galactic trade module, portable refinery, and a signal booster. I picked up the signal booster, no problems. However, when I tried to pick up the refinery, it said inventory full, left the refinery (which was empty before trying to pick up) and everything else at the base disappeared - both in that room (including the door) as well as the rest of my custom made base.

I reloaded and this time stood in the doorway, just to see what it would do, and I was able to pick up the empty refinery no problem. However, the booster was too far away to grab at the door, so I stepped inside, and tried to pick it up. BLIP, inventory listed as full and base contents disappeared. I had 2 or 3 open spaces in my inventory, so there was room to pick up the booster, and I wasn't trying to dismantle it.

I'm going to send a bug report now, but wanted to share here, too.
Yeees I remember, I used the Signal booster to... I think locate drop pods? Outside of my base, I don't have one set up there. So I put it down next to the landing pad, way outside of my base, used it, picked it back up.

When I got to the (already visited!) drop pod I didn't know where that stuff in my inventory came from, I think it was cobalt and two other stacks - but I remember the cobalt because, where did that come from. Then I repaired the drop pod, because it let me do that - aaaaand nothing! I had the thing already. That was the only part that the game cared to remember. The booster sent me to the pod I had already been at. The pod let me repair it, despite already having done so once. And then the thing didn't work because I had it already.

But to top it all off - on return to my base, it was empty. As we already know.
What a fun and productive 15 minutes.
