I install NMS every so often and give it a try. I'm excited that multiplayer is finally here. My discoveries have always been offline on Linux. Does everyone else experience this? There's no multiplayer option? Is it because GOG Galaxy has to be installed and running?

If GOG Galaxy has to be used, does anyone just load up GOG Galaxy in WINE and install it that way successfully? GOG Galaxy is always buggy under WINE for me, so I haven't bothered in a long time.

I can't answer much other than to confirm that Galaxy is required for multiplayer in NMS.

Thanks, that's super helpful regardless. I might have to get it working and create a Lutris script so people can one-click install and configure it.
For any other Linux users searching for this, I got it to work with the network! Also save game cloud sync works.

In Lutris, I installed GOG Galaxy 1.2. I allowed it to update to the latest and installed NMS.

I then transferred my saved games over (C:\Users\steamuser\Application Data\Hello Games\) Note: that while I'm not playing on Steam I use Proton underneath to run it, so steamuser and not my actual user name contained the save data.

I then closed GOG Galaxy, and killed all Wine processes. I right-clicked on GOG Galaxy in Lutris and went to configure. I enabled DVXK, D9VK under the runner settings and used Proton 4.11. Under system settings I specifically set the Vulkan ICD Loader to nvidia_x86_64 since I have an nvidia GPU.

I then saved, right-clicked and clicked Winetricks, and installed the following Windows stuff:

D9VK
DVXK
Vulkanrt

If you don't do the above, I believe it will crash as is my experience with my normal NMS install because it can't use Vulkan for whatever reason.

Click OK and such.

Then just played and everything seemed fine. Remember to change your graphics settings again if you don't want the defaults.

Intersting info. Thanks!

I"m still deciding what to do with the gaming box when Win7 becomes non-supported. Migrating to Win10 is the obvious choice but after following the saga at Ask Woody and various, I'm not enthusiastic about going that route.
