The background image on the GoG landing page for NMS has a interesting airborn object that sure looks a lot like a classic flying saucer. If NMS is truly trying to capture the images and ambience of the classic science fiction era, good old flying saucers are an obvious gap. Any rumors out there?

OTOH, if HG goes all in and includes other aspects of flying saucer mythology, can we look forward to (or run in horror from) anal probe upgrades for multitools? ;-)
Rumours?, yep. Apparently the earth is flat, Donald Trump was an honest and caring man, the covid vaxxine also injects nanobots .. I blame social media for not having an IQ test pre-requisite for new joiners LOL.

I like the flying shrooms but have only seen them once in game during my first ever multiplayer experience doing the Community Expedition, but since I went back to Normal mode game (really not impressed with the MP lag fest), they have not randomly shown up yet, early days though.

I have wondered if those flying shrooms are a nod to Piers Anthony's "Of Man and Manta"

It would be a nice little addition to the game if HG do include some kind of rare classic model UFO sighting, there could be a rare achievement : Close Encounter with an alien probe. Multi-tool idea is probably not family friendly enough for HG though :).

Yes, that does look like a botanical. On the other hand, whoever picked that image must have known that it resembled a 1950's flying saucer. The truth is out there ...

HG has already added one new ship class with the Living Ships. A new quest for a new exotic?
The flying shrooms are definitely organic, if you have not seen them in game yet have a look at the video HG released for the Expeditions launch https://youtu.be/O7T0_admYi4
A bit flubbery. When scanned they register as fauna, thats why I wonder if they are a nod to "Of man and manta".

Oh right you mean as a Starship we can use, not sure how the flight dynamics would feel, but yes it might be an interesting craft to get.

I was going with the idea of something mysterious we can chase occasionally but not quite get there (or it warps out when you get too close just to tease us, as you say the truth is out there)

Maybe with a hint of one day finding its home unique planet, or even a very rare ufo mothership as a derelict, as a veeery long term achievement and another unique extended mission and unique decorations to add to the trophys' we can adorn our Freighter / bases with.

Something the game still needs is an extremely long term hook to help keep us searching the many galaxies :).

@HG if you have your GOG ears on .. some good ideas here for another update ?

Maybe a bit "Mars Attacks!" spoof film style, loved that martian disguised as a woman who floats eerily, have something like that (not the same obviously, but something without legs that floats and is menacing) wandering the corridors as an adversary, a unique weapon upgrade to battle them with and make the mothership an epic wander seeing as it would be a one-off discovery. The big prize being you can take off in a UFO.

But please dont make it available pretty soon after the game starts. Maybe one appearance of the UFO some time after completing the Artemis / Apollo / Null and Living Ship missions, and periodically a few more ufo sightings which zoom off if we get too nosy / close to them .. But the eventual meet up with the mothership would be a long term tease goal on a par with reaching the centre of a galaxy in terms of time taken to get there.

I think, the long terms are ruined with the abuse of NMSCE. Any player with 20 hours in can owns any S-Class Multitool or Ship. Only the S-Freighter is a last heavy thing.

The last update "Expeditions" is in my opinion the way, HG will the game story design in future. Series of Quests should prevent the rewards from abusing like NMSCE or joining players to locations, that not reachable for himself.

For me as an Offline player is this annoying, but understandable. I am happy with the content from the game with update "Companion" and have my own long term challenges - no use of NMSCE, collect nice ships in unified colors, building theme bases in harmony to the surroundings from the planet etc.

Fair point, it did sound a bit like politics, but was purely intended as a laugh about the general gullibility of people on social networks. Note to self dont engage keyboard after rum.
My bad :)
