So, I've picked this back up on my new computer, to see if I can finally play my way through it.

Playing on the second difficulty, and I'm getting my ass handed to me as early as the OSEC encounter-failed there twice, made it through that once but got shredded by reactivating platforms because I had barely any hull strength left.

What tips and tricks have I forgotten?!
Honestly I doubt you have forgotten anything. The Outer Platforms are armed with the missiles and the inner platforms are armed with the anti flak cannons. I send in the fighters to damage the missile capability of the outer platforms. The inner platforms are then handled by the Stiletto.

I downloaded this game online and I am attempting to just tweak the weapons and ship data to make the game a bit more entertaining rather than spend 30 minutes firing on a ship and never getting anywhere. Not sure if you know how to do that or not but I would appreciate any help if you do. I like the main story line. And the game is absolutely beautiful.

Well I hope the info I gave you can help with the battle.
Yeah, I got killed pretty quickly too...

Spoiler Alert

What I did to beat it was play until I discovered the cruiser off to the side, and send the rescue party over. That shuts off the turrets for a few minutes, with which you can charge in and take out at least three, with fighters disabling maybe another one or two. Then, if you set your fighters to defend yourself, they can fly intercept on the missiles that will be launched against you very very soon.

Don't send your fighters after the inner platforms: they'll get shredded.
The main problem isn't the platforms, it's the fight before, which chews me up to the point that I literally can't take more than two or three hits from platforms.
Its been a few years since I played Nexus, but if I remember correctly can't you keep your ships out of the platforms firing range? And what weapons are you using? Can you customise your ship by that point?

EDIT: I forgot, if I remember correctly you can also target sub-systems on enemy ships, targetting the right ones can really make a difference. Have you tried that?
