I'm beginning to suspect that I'm looking at a bug because I can't figure out how to save and/or quit in my (newly installed) Nexus single player campaign.

I did some googling and saw a few other references to this issue, but I didn't find a clear answer or explanation. Am I supposed to be able to use the ESC key to open a menu for saving and/or quitting?

Am I supposed to be able to do this during the briefings?
Am I supposed to be able to do this during the missions?
Are there no "Game Options" buttons hidden in the interface anywhere?

I played through the first (tutorial) mission, but then I couldn't figure out how to quit so I moved on to #2. I couldn't seem to save or quit during mission 2 or the briefing for mission 3 either. After starting mission 3 and seeing that I still couldn't find a way to quit, I used ctrl+alt+del to close my game.

This is strange. Usually you should have no problems to press the ESC key during a mission and open a menu where you can save/load the game, edit options, and quit.

Can you please describe in details what happens when you play a mission and press the ESC key?
Thanks for your reply.

The description is a simple one: Nothing (that is visible) happens when I press the ESC key. :)

I was going mad trying to mouse over every inch of the interface, hoping that there was a hidden button or panel in the UI that would access the menu screen. I take it that the ESC key is the only way to open the menu? Is it supposed to work during the briefings?

FYI: I know my ESC key works (I use it in Theme Hospital, among other places)
I'm running Vista 32
I installed the game using the "Run As Administrator" option on the setup.exe

I may try running in some sort of compatibility mode today to see if that helps. It seems like a very peculiar issue.

Thanks for confirming the intended function though. I skimmed through the manual and I didn't see any mention of how to save/load and quit, but perhaps I missed it.

I'd recommend to uninstall and reinstall the game in admin mode. I know you already did this, but you never know if something went wrong during installation. Also, do you have any kind of overlay active, say Steam or anything else, like RadeonPro? You might try to disable that.
Thanks for the advice, but it seems to be working now.

I've restarted from shutdown and ran the game as administrator. I'm not sure if either of those changes caused the fix, but the ESC key is now working (with a slight delay) in both the briefings and the missions.

I've occasionally seen weird issues with games if I try to play them immediately after install (and without restarting windows), so that's my guess for now.

I'll mark this resolved and post later if I see the issue return.

Thanks for your help.
Update for anyone else who runs into this issue:

I've seen this non-functional ESC key issue (bug?) several times since my last post.

It seems to be related to using alt+tab to minimize game.

I'm not sure if that's the only cause, and I don't think I had used alt+tab to minimize when I first encountered the issue.

Regardless, I've twice been able to recover from the bug and regain the use of my ESC key (to access the menu) by opening the task manager with ctrl+alt+del.

Opening the task manager also forces the game to minimize. I've found that after closing the task manager and reopening/maximizing the game, the ESC key will start working again.

This is on Windows Vista 32. It's obviously a peculiar work-around, and I don't know for sure that this is the cause and the fix, but I hope this info can be useful to anyone else who sees this issue.

FYI: In the course of trying to recover from this bug with the ESC key, I've noticed some other issues (like parts of the astronomical/tactical UI disappearing or the buttons becoming non-functional). I think this may also be related to my alt-tabbing, but those issues were also resolved by moving through the UI screens. Doing so seemed to 'reset' the broken buttons, and I mention it here because it's possible that those actions were also related to 'resetting' my access to the ESC key and the game menu.
Huh, that might be my problem, since I sometimes have problems, and I thought it was just the game being like "NO SAVING MIDMISSION", but I do alt-tab a lot XD

Yes, the problem with ESC key is related to using "alt+tab" to minimize the game, but you dont need to close the game with task manager and restart it.
Just return to game and press "alt" key once and all should return to normal.
Generally it is never a good idea to Alt+Tab a game that was never designed for it. You should seriously consider running Nexus in windowed mode. Information on how to enforce that can be found here.]Information on how to enforce that can be found here: http://arparso.de/nexus/forum/index.php?topic=95.0
I rather dislike playing games in windowed mode. I find the window distracting, even if it's maximized to (almost) full screen.

You're right of course that you can't take alt-tabbing for granted with new games, but I rarely do it by choice. The problem is that, on a laptop like mine, many of the driver-based functions will force some games to minimize or window temporarily. (e.g., I have to use function keys to disable my trackpad and change my system volume, and this can cause issues even for newer games like Crysis).
I absolutely sympathize. My Samsung laptop also has its fair share of issues with games, not because of CPU/GPU power but because of that overlay that shows speaker loudness or brightness of whatever. While I'm not a fan of windowed mode either, in this case there is a severe lack of options to choose from, I'm afraid.

Still, did you enjoy the game?

Thanks for this post! Picked up a copy, fun game, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to exit... tapping ALT after getting back in game allowed me to ESC to the menu.

Thanks again.
