Who the heck do you think you are? Huh?

Putting up some nasty message across my screen about how, NOw that the game won't launch, RIGHT AFTER A TWELVE MEG download, it's "NOT A BUG, it's YOUR SET UP"

I didn't change ANYTHING. My VIRUS protect didn't Do anything. YOU DID.

Ya know what Beamdog?? I don't need this crap, or You and your crap. YOU did this. Not me.

I've run the program successfully since install. ONE download from You - and it doesn't work. You're done Pal.

Never again. Bye.

I am shocked and appauld at the level of arrogance that is implied. NOT the first time I've seen it either.

Overnight had to uninstall half my custom portraits just to get the game to run on a new game. There's some serious memory issue going on.
Nice. Interesting that Beamdog haven't really changed much in 15 years or so. Still adding bugs to games that ran well enough, and still showing that special something PR.

I only really got the EE for Luke Sculls added mods anyway. My original NWN setup is pretty flawless. I notice they didn't enhance/fix the HIPS issue either after all this time. Probably just as well.

The issue is with Windows blocking Neverwinter Nights from accessing its files. Your OS is literally blocking the game from working. Windows is overzealous blocking access to your My Documents folder where NWN needs to put files, so you’ll need to provide NWN access to your My Documents folder manually. NWN can’t do that for you without violating security somehow on your machine.

Previously the game wouldn’t be able to tell you anythiing, now it does.

That honestly seems like a fundamental game issue rather than an OS problem. Oblivion & Fallout—the grumpy grandpa bears of wonky video game modding have no issue accessing My Documents. Not sure how I would even give access to the game beyond running as Admin.

I found a solution to the problem I was having. I use NWN Installer Tool and employed its portrait manager to experiment with numbers. Seems the update after the update just resulted in a reduced tolerance for the maximum number it could load without crashing. By whittling down (excluding) duplicates and a few dodgy entries I found the sweet spot by keeping the total below 600; with 598 portraits the game runs stably again.

So what you are saying, is that it has nothing to do with access permissions, but instead, you broke the game by exceeding the limits it could handle for portrait loading...

That's known and PEBKAC...
No—what I was clearly saying is that after an official update the game suddenly couldn't load the same number of modded assets it was able to handle just fine before the update. I didn't make any claims about access permissions, you're mistaking me for the post I was replying to.

Is the NWN Installer Tool included in the game installation folder or is it a seperate 3rd party download?

I don't plan to add any more portraits for now, but if I do, it sounds like a handy tool to organize the portraits. :)

I've had the game on hold for some time, but will eventually get back to it for another replay. It's also heavily modded lol. I've played the base version so many times (w/o mods), that now modding is a must for me.

Though last time I started it, everything was working good, so I'm reluctant to update it or add additional mods since it took a lot of time to fiddle/tweak to get everything working lol. But portraits might be the one thing I may modify.

As a side note, it, along with Fallout1/2 and BG EE are some of the few games I leave permanently installed in my SSD. MOO2 and IG2 are also 2 more, but these are 4x games.

Does anyone else have favorite games that they leave permanently installed? Just curious, maybe I should start a new thread on that haha.

NWN Installer Tool (NIT) is a lightweight 3rd party mod manager associated with Neverwinter Vault. It's feature packed, with loads of utilities and takes a little getting used to but highly recommended. Took me awhile to even notice the portrait manager and I've used NIT for years. It let me winnow out individual portraits from the larger packs where there's a lot of overlap without any faff, taking care of the different sizes etc.Probably the best feature about it is how it allows direct in-app downloads of mods from the vault including all their dependencies, hakpaks, the lot and deploying all files to their correct directories automatically. The only thing you need to do is copy-paste the module's url into NIT and it takes care of the rest.

I always have one of the isometric Fallouts installed depending on what flavour I'm in the mood for; a modded Fallout: NV; og Baldur's Gate 1&2 (enhanced editions are fine but BG1's gameplay isn't the same and I like the original interface); Arcanum; Dragon Age: Origins; Quake; System Shock 2 and a heavily modded install of Morrowind.

Sorry about the late reply and thank you for the info. :)

I'll defintely check it out and focus on the portait part, since that may be the only thing I mess with at this point.

Ah yeah, you just reminded me of another favorite I have re-install lol, Dragon Age: Origins. Thankfully the GOG version has everything in it. Drakensang is another one I kept installed. Damn, I'd better stop of the list will be endless haha.

I actually have to try out Fallout: NV, not sure why I keep putting it off. Maybe that'll be my next stop after my current DOS EE playthrough.

I can relate, my list goes on for a while too. You should give Fallout: NV a go. It's unquestionably the 3d Fallout that feels most like the originals in tone and humour. Unusual and interesting to see Obsidian tackling their first open world game. Check out the Viva New Vegas mod guide if you do—a well organised, up to date and vanilla+ focused guide. It leads you step-by-step through stability; extensions; bug fixes; user interface and on through gameplay stuff and extra content if you want that. I just stop at UI. You don't need Mod Organiser if you're not interested, I used Vortex for a very light mod list while respecting the load order given and everything works fine.

Edit: I bought a digital copy of Drakensang years ago and never got around to playing it. It looked terrific for a 2008 rpg but I was a bit put off by reviews and left it on the back burner. Totally forgot about it, I should give it a crack.

I will certainly check out the Viva New Vegas mod guide. Thanks for pointing that out. The modding community has always been amazing when it comes to patches and QoL features, while leaving the original experience minimally impacted. Especially after the original developer stops posting updates for their games without fully patching out all bugs.

Though after a 2nd or 3rd playthrough, heavily modding a game can be fun too lol.

BTW, I don't know if you have an Amazon Prime account, but if so, don't forget to check out the free Prime GOG game codes if you're not already aware. Here's a thread where people post upcoming releases in case you need it. Last month was the best one, but this month seems to have some good ones coming too.

I do currently, cheers. I drift in and out of Prime depending on releases—the gaming freebies and free Twitch sub (which I use to support my favourite creator) are the most interesting things about it imo and I keep an eye on them, even when I drop the sub. Thanks to your link though I stumbled on the Community Giveaway thread which is brilliant because I've been trying to give away codes for games I already own on independent posts and this is a much better place to donate them.

Edit: Just saw Scorn is being offered later this month, which strikes another game off my wishlist, awesome!
