In the "portraits" folder that you add to the NWN folder is there a limit as to how many portraits you can place there? When you go into the game there are a lot of portraits that I want to clean out and place new ones in the game but is there a limit as to how many character portraits you can have?

Thanks
I have not tested this, but I believe the limit is: as many as you can tolerate in increasing the time it takes to load the portrait selection screen.
This thread inspired me to go and find some custom portarits for my game. The problem I'm having is there doesn't seem to BE a portraits folder to put them in... I've looked throiugh every folder and subfolder in the NWN directory and nothing remotely like that appears. Any ideas on what could have happened? The game plays great and I can obviously choose any of the stock portraits I wish so they have to be somewhere.

Evidentally some of the bundled versions of NWN didn't get a portraits folder - just create your own :

Somewhere deep in the bowels of this forum you will find that I too had this problem. I did create a folder and dumped a hundred portraits (5 per character) into it but nothing showed up within the game. I then realized that you have to name the folder "portraits", plural not singular and now it works.

I now am gleaning through hundreds of downloaded portraits to find what I like (along with about 50 mods) and plan on dumping several hundred portraits into that "portraits" folder. I was just concerned that there might be a limit and I would have to go through my collection again and cut it down. Have fun!

Yes. It's a huge limit and I can't tell you the number, but at some point the game will hate you and start crashing on character creation or module load or something.

The same goes for localvault .bics. Once you have thousands, the game starts having problems.

A BW Dev explained it to me saying that the game needs to load all of those things (and everything in your override directory) at game start and eventually you will run out of resources. I can probably dig up a link to that discussion if you want?

Anyway, good practice if you intend to download several portraits packs is to get a program that can do batch file conversions, convert all the _h portraits into jpgs so they can be easily seen in windows explorer, and then work your way through deleting the duplicates, because you wil end up with quite a few duplicates if you download lots of portrait packs. Not particularily fun but if you wait till you got thousands like I did then it is a huge job.

have fu... err Good Luck :)
Thanks everyone. Worked like a charm and easy to do. I had a similar problem when I installed CEP and had to create folders as well, I had suspected that might be what it was but upon googling the issue I found no fewer than 8 different "tutorials" on how to get portraits in NWN. :P So I turned to my friends at GOG. Thanks again!

Do you want a closer look at your downloaded portraits? Maybe you want to weed out the ones you have no use for? Tired of waiting all that time for the portraits to come up when you make a new character? Here’s how to find out what portraits you have:

Download Irfanview from http://www.irfanview.com/ or do a search for Irfanview on the internet. Install the program by clicking on the downloaded setup file. When asked what programs to associate Irfanview with, at the very least choose “TGA files.” By default, Irfanview will install in your program files in a folder called Irfanview. This program saves a lot of time and makes it easy to view/save/delete the portraits you are looking at to become your in-game character.
Let's see; ad talk, repeated posting, including of a link, text that could have been done by topic search-and-replace...

If you're not a spambot, you're doing a very good impression of one.
