Fighting in the Docks, I was killed by, of all things, a beetle. I chose to respawn rather than revert to my last save from an hour prior. An odd item appeared in my inventory, something resembling an animal hide, called "PC Properties." I can neither sell it nor drop it. Its description mentions the current game patch (1.69) and one of the extra modules (unclear if it refers to one of the expansion packs or the Kingmaker premium module). Googling tells me it has something to do with horse riding in one of the expansions. But I'm still in the first storyline. What's this thing doing here?

This happened to me too, but I was testing out a character build with console commands. I'm not sure how to fix it since I deleted the character after I was done.
The item called "PC Properties" is supposed to be a "hidden item" that players do not see.

All characters, be it player character or NPC, have the normal equipment slots (such as left hand, head, belt, etc.). They also have four "creature slots", which player characters can't actually access (right attack, left attack, bite/special attack, and hide/skin).

With the last patch (version 1.69), player characters are given a "skin" item that the game automatically puts in the creature hide slot on the PC. This "skin" item is used to grant horse-riding feats/options (such as mount, dismount, and assign mount) to characters that don't already have them. The original campaigns do not have horses (they came from a later developed module), but the code was added to the full game patch to support community-made modules (adventures) which do feature them.

Without additional coding or access from a Dungeon Master in multiplayer, there's really no simple way to get rid of that item from your inventory. I'm not sure what caused that item to be unequipped when you respawned, but it's flagged in the game engine as a "plot" item that can't be dropped.

The Krit posted the easy fix on the old Bio Boards. You simply need to drag the item into a Quick Slot. You can then use the Quick Slot to Re-Equip the Skin.

Solution 2; (Single Player Only)
You can get rid of the item by making all items in your inventory dropable. You do this by using the consol commands to run the script nw_itemreset. You can do this by typing the following three lines in the chat bar.

##DebugMode 1
##runscript nw_itemreset
##DebugMode 0

I managed to pickpocket 'PC Properties' from the void creature at the beginning of chapter 2.
