If I start the game from Galaxy, everything appears ok until I reach the main menu whereupon the mouse buttons simply don't work. The cursor moves, but clicking on the menu buttons does nothing. As a result I have to alt-tab out of the game into task manager and close the game that way.
Launching the game from the exe works.

Is there a solution to the problem? I'd like to have my saves available so I can play on my laptop as well, when the PC is unavailable to me.

I had the same issue. Managed to get the game running by right clicking the game in galaxy and going to additional executables - settings to raise the resolution. Unfortunately it doesn't go to 1080p, but at 720p the game worked at least. Trying to find if I can set a custom resolution in an .ini but not super thrilled with gog's delivery of this good old game.
