I know this is not on GOG but i figure it soon will be.

I recently had several problems triying to run NWN2 + both expansions under Windows 7. Heres how i solved it:

First please follow thes instructions from Bioware Admin Moonsong.

Installing NWN 2

Before installing, I would highly recommend installing the latest version of DirecX 9.0c (Redistributable), whether or not you have an older version of DX 9 installed. Despite popular beliefs, DX 10 and DX 11 are not fully backward compatible with games and other applications designed for DX 9.0c, such as NWN 2. So, even if you have Vista or Win 7 with DX 10 or higher, you will still need to install DX 9.0c (Redistributable). Note that DX 9 will co-exist with the later versions, it will not overwrite them, nor will the later versions overwrite DX 9.

Also, .NET Frameworks should be updated to at least version 3.5. DX 9.0c and .Net Frameworks can be obtained from Microsoft's download site; make sure you download and install the correct version for your operating system.

Installation in a Nutshell

1. Disable anti virus/malware applications and software-based firewalls (including Windows Firewall). If re-installing, make sure there are no folders or files left from a previous installation of NWN 2 and the related expansions.

2. Install NWN 2 (OC); DO NOT update when the installer asks you to, simply exit the install program. Launch NWN 2 after completing the install and play through the first conversation, then exit the game (required for those using digital download versions, recommended for everyone). If not installing the expansions, start NWN 2 and select Update from the menu option.

3. Install MoTB: DO NOT update when the installer asks you to, simply exit the install program. If not installing SoZ, start NWN 2 and select Update from the menu option.

4. Install SoZ: DO NOT update when the installer asks you to, simply exit the install program. Start NWN 2 and select Update from the menu option.

Note: The preferred and recommended method of updating NWN 2 is by use of NWUpdate, which is accessed from the NWN 2 Start Up menu. NWUpdate will automatically download and install the appropriate updates for NWN 2, even from a fresh or new install.

After doing the above its not plain sailing heres a few pointers:

1. Make sure you have the redisributed 9.0c from Microsoft not a dx9 updater. The updater will just say that your already up to date.
2. On your exe. go into properties and:
a) Select windows XP service pack 2 compatability.
b) Select run as Administrator.
c) Also you can tick disable visual themes.
d) disable desktop composition.
e) disable scaling on high DPI settings.

To be honest i dont know if c, d & e help.

3. I then encountered a problem with the game crashing. This was due to the graphics card sending a higher refresh rate than my monitor could deal with. So keeping in game resolution to my usual 1680 x 1050 i turned alot of the in game graphics settings to low or off to increase performance. This helped but the game was still crashing especially against Lizardmen!

4. So on investigating the cataylst control centre for my graphics card and i found my 60 Hz monitor had a 75 Hz maximum refresh rate. Thinking this could be a problem i found a reduce DVI frequency on high-resolution displays bow to tick under the heading DVI settings. Box ticked and the problem was solved. I can even now fight the Lizardmen without the game crashing.

So finally i can play. Hopefully this will help you enjoy this game again aswell.
You stand a much better chance of getting help in the official forum for that game:

But thanks anyway. :)
And I hope that when/if NWN2 comes to gog, it includes the expansions and the patching is already done.
Now that Atari released a complete edition themselves (Dungeons and Dragons Neverwinter Nights The Complete Collection), I doubt we'll see it on GOG. :(

Does anyone know if the Complete Collection is already patched or do we still have to run through the hours of downloading through the autopatcher?

Nah, last attempts to cash-ins is what we're seeing. NWN2 platinum is also $9,99 (-50%) on Steam right now. Wait 6 months and the complete collection drops to -50% sales bin as well. Then a bit longer and they might see GOG as the final way to squeeze the last few bucks out of the franchise.

As for myself, I have 2 copies of the original game (one freebie), all the expansions and the whole package from a previous steam sale. So might as well buy it from GOG too, if it ever arrives... :)
Theres a new Neverwinter coming out next year as a MMO game. Looks very cool.

The Neverwinter MMO is being developed by Cryptic studios so I am extremely sceptical given my previous experiences with Cryptic :(
Yep, I was interested/hopeful when this was announced as some sort of co-op-multiplayer thingie. But then stuff got swapped and now it's going to be just another run-of-the-mill MMO with D&D logo on top.

Blow the whole development budget on non-game-related promo videos and you can't go wrong.

Dammit. Give me NWN 3 and make it right this time.
(hint: NWN1 just needs a graphics update)

This! :D

Pimp the graphics (though not too high so everyone can play it - it was never about just the graphics anyway) and make everything run smooth (without the need to tweak the ini and set compatibility modes and stuff) on Win7 and i'll be happy. :D

EDIT: Oh, and DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING GAMEPLAY-RELATED. It's perfect the way it is... ;)
