Nwn1: buying maps off the merchant. What do they actually do? I've of course bought a map and tried to compare it with the map window from a previous save. But I don't see an actual difference?

There is no difference. If you buy the map before entering the area, it removes the fog of war and lets you see the whole area. That is why I dont buy the maps because i like to see where I visited.
