It's disappointing that local vault has fallen and all I see are players continuing to occupy server vaults. My rant extends to the fact that there are not only so many MMORPGs out there, but most of the popular NWN servers are SV as well. Is it because story telling can be a lot more effective when the server contains the characters, and items require work and sacrifice to obtain that draws players? Does a video game have to mimic reality as well?
Local vaults have always occupied a special place in my gaming life, as the customization of weapons, armor, and physical traits allowed a greater aspect of control and story-telling on part of the players. Not only do you have the freedom to play a level 1 pauper, but also a level 40 god, with your own unique back story. Instant gratification as you jump into a role playing scenario full of drama, or simply sit around a town square - shooting the breeze.
Admittedly, I am biased. I hopped around on server vaults and never found them to be entertaining, or was simply too constraining. I was a member of one of the earliest roleplaying servers back in 2002 (Anhel'jai), co-created a very popular local vault server (Durgalbane) and saw myself head to college on the heels of Evereska.
My question: Would you all be interested if there was a new Local Vault server? Would there be interest in organizing roleplay events on an existing one (Island of Mianyr comes to mind) or would there be an opportunity to create our own GOG.com Local Vault world?
