Hi - I'm an old-school fan of the game just like you. I felt the urge to play this titan of a game once more. However, Once installing the Enhance and Diamond edition the online servers failed to work. the message was Fatal Error. I've browsed online for some time now and have had no solution. Might it have something to do with your firewall? I understand this applies to both EE and Diamond? Does single player work for you?
