I understand that gamespy has been down for a few years now right? but my problem doesnt even get that far. as soon as i hit multiplayer it tells me it cant connect to master server. then when i hit join online game, it says "connection failed, try another nick'.. WTF DOES THAT MEAN? someone please help. just bought the game, havent played for years, dying to play!!
For Neverwinter Nights 1? The game as you know is fairly old now and had its last patch out well before Gamespy shut down. You will need to request a CD key in order to play online. To do this, follow the directions in this stickied thread at the top of the Neverwinter Nights forum page. For "Problem type," scroll down to the bottom and choose "multiplayer key request" and wait for support to get back to you.

Wait times vary; I got mine within 24 hours. Keep in mind that the company is located in Poland and that there's a much smaller support staff available during weekends.
did you have the same issue? whats the multiplayer key? did it work for you?
Well, anyone who wants to join a multiplayer server in NWN1 needs a unique CD key, so yes, it affects everyone. But it's just an extra step of requesting the key from GOG. As I said in my previous post, I requested mine and got it, and I was able to join a server and play.

I forgot to mention earlier that since the Gamespy server no longer works as it's defunct, there is also no matchmaking. You have to directly connect to a server. After obtaining your unique CD key, check this thread for more detailed information on how you can connect to a server.
You can, however, download Neverwinter Nights Client Extender, which will allow you to skip the long wait for the defunct master server connection and will restore matchmaking:

What you got is probably an archive. Do you know how to unpack an archive?
If you do, do so and move the unpacked nwncdkey.ini file into the directory with your copy of NWN installed.

If you don't, download and install software like 7zip ( http://7-zip.org/ ), then right-click on the archive, choose 7zip and select the "unpack here" option or something similar.
damn dude idk what any of that means, i just know how to role play and build killer characters...

What he means is that the file you received from support is a ZIP file, which is most commonly an archive (collection) of files, though in this case it's a collection of one.

If you don't have a program to unpack the file you have, I would also suggest downloading 7-Zip; it will allow you to open most ZIP, RAR, 7z and other types of archive files.

You can have the program extract the file to your chosen directory (i.e. C:/Neverwinter Nights Diamond or where you have your copy of the game installed). If prompted to overwrite, select "Yes" (replace nwncdkey.ini with the new one from support).

You will now be able to connect to a server.
you need the enhanced edition for multiplayer to work. You can still direct connect to old servers running the original nwn version. You probably won't find much of a player base left in the old servers.
