I want to copy and rename the OC module for editing (so as not to affect any of the games I'm currently playing). I'd like to take a crack at "rebalancing" and "improving" the OC henchmen (and maybe the SoU henchmen too), but still want to finish the games I'm currently playing unmodded.

Eh did you have a question about this or were you just issuing a statement of your intentions?

Assuming you are not sure where to start, I believe each OC henchman has a large series of separate templates, one for each level benchmark they can reach. (When you tell them, "I'd like you to level up," a whole new template spawns in, this system predates NWN's introduction of package-leveling scripts in SoU that can level NPCs on the go.)

So the general procedure to go about this, I believe, would be to modify these templates and save them in the override directory. No modifications to the OC MODULES would be necessary. But it's a lot of templates to modify. The henches' heartbeat and determinecombatround scripts can also be overriden, if you wanted to make ai changes.

Yes, I do have a question. How do I find, copy, and rename the OC module so I can edit it without it affecting current play? It sounds like putting things in the override folder would mess up my current games.

Ah, ok.

The seven OC modules (prelude, chapter1, 1E, 2, 2E, 3, 4) are in the 'nwm' directory. They can simply be copy-pasted into the 'modules' directory, and the file extensions renamed to .mod, and they will not interfere with an OC playthrough from that location.

The procedure for modifying the henchmen in-module still involves changing something like 80 templates. If you don't want to use override, the toolset has a feature for exporting a package of templates, into .erf files I believe, which you can import into each chapter after loading it in the toolset.

Well, it took me over two years to get around to it, but I'm finally experimenting. So far, I have successfully copied the OC files into the module directory so I can edit them in the toolset. I've renamed the files though, so now I'm trying to figure out what I need to edit so that they are all properly linked to one another again. Also still looking for where all the "level by level" copies for each of the henchmen are.
