is it possible to play through the single player campaign with a friend on a different computer?

Yes, you just have to go into Multiplayer and when you create the server you can choose to load one of the campaign modules.

MP with the campaigns and my bf is how I started my obsession with this game. It's a lot of fun. :)

HoTU unfortunately wasn't designed with mp in mind tho so when you come to play that you'll want to check out this thread and download the things from NWVault to make it work. Official Campaign Multiplayer Workaround Thread

Good luck. I have bought this game 3 times now. I bought it when it came out, I bought the platinm edition and now I bought it on GOG and i can never play a lan game in my home. Isn't the thing about the gog version that I can have several installs at home and play lan games with the one copy? It wont even let me join an internet or lan game wit the same message, your cd key is in use. WTF?

You have to submit a support request to get a CD-Key, and you can only have one key per copy, making LAN play with one copy not possible.
I don't know why you'd expect Bioware to let you play LAN games with one copy. Not good for business
