At the risk of a "plug"... my one complaint about NeoScavenger is the whole "one save slot, permadeath" thing. The dev was firm about it, but for me it's the only thing that annoys me; I'm rather "free time poor", so losing all progress to a silly mistake or even a bug makes playing any game with such a save system or lack thereof a chore.

So, for my own use (but later decided to share it in case others wanted it) I made a very basic "save manager" in the form of a Windows batch file, which you can find on the official forums via this link:
http://bluebottlegames.com/main/node/1280

Even if you love permadeath in games, having a backup of your NeoScavenger saves is IMO a must, because by using Flash you might find that your "cache cleaner" or other "junk file cleaner" software also deletes your NeoScavenger saves! If only for that reason, make backups!

Another reason: I can think of nothing more annoying than having the game bug out and ruining a save, thus costing you all progress through no fault of your own.

Besides, it will also let you keep multiple "save slots", meaning you can play up to three (more if you just copy the saves elsewhere) characters at a time.

Again, sorry for what seems like a "plug" post, though I get nothing from sharing this apart from hoping it helps more folks enjoy NeoScavenger without frustration!
I agree to some extent with your arguments, and though I'm more in favor of using a game as it's supposed to be in its core-rules, I also need some sort of backup if things go awry. And your batch comes in reaaally handy =D

I dowloaded it some days ago, and it helped me once for a "real" reason, not "player-related". So just for that, kuddos !

Don't have anything in particular to adress regarding the batch itself : simple of use, straightforward... just fine.

Thanks for your creation and share.

My pleasure. Really glad it's not only being used by other folks, but has "saved" them from disaster too! :)

I believe that no matter how much someone might love "permadeath" in games, they are still not going to be happy if they lose all their progress to a random crash, accidental save deletion or a genuine mis-click!
Hi!

I have been working on something similar. My app not only copies the save file to it's folder, but it also keeps copies of all previous save files, and draws a timeline graph. You can also add comments to the save point. So if you suddenly find yourself in a situtation where you know for sure you're screwed, you can restore some previous save file, and play from there.

To be honest, I have wrote this mostly to have fun with this graph control I have created for this :D

Here's the exe file, and even the sources if anybody is interested:

I just lost character that I spent 20+ hours playing because save got corrupted and no longer works... if i ever stop being mad at this, i won't ever play this game again without making backups :|
