I have the same problem. This might be just the first instance; as this version gets older, more and more software will stop supporting it. Upgrading is a bit of a pain since it tends to break things, so I don't like to do it very often. I usually skip major versions - I went from 14.04 to 18.04, and I would like to skip over 20.04 and wait for the next version to become stable and accepted if possible. (The process was far worse when I switched from Slackware to Ubuntu.)
As a temporary solution, I have found that the Windows version of this game works just fine with Wine, requiring no tinkering or configuration. I'm reluctant to upgrade at this point just for one game that I can run perfectly well using Wine, but as soon as this becomes more of a problem, I'll have to go through the hassle. It's inevitable, but I'm hoping to put it off as long as I can. (Incidentally, older Linux games sometimes stop working. For example, I run the Windows version of Corpse Party using Wine because the Linux version is antiquated and requires some libraries that are no longer standard and would create conflicts if I installed them.)
If the developers could recompile it using an older version, that would certainly be nice. Unless there is a reason why the game needs the latest versions of these libraries, I would think that the developers of this game wouldn't want to be on the leading edge of driving 18.04 into obsolescence, as it might hurt their sales.
