I can't tell if this is a bug, a glitch or by design. The game makes you play out take certain no-win encounters. I stay away from the "looking for lost ships" or the "kill the monster missions" until I have a ship/crew capable of taking them on with a shot at sucess...but, every time I head out to the Pacific, I end up running into a lousy lost ship from a mission that I didn't take and wanted no part of until later in the game...no matter...A blurb comes up giving you a short selection of options... You can...
A. assist the stricken ship... or
B. assist the stricken ship...
There is no way to avoid the encounter and you can't retreat from the tactical map. Its just cue the sharks/pirates for 8 or 10 rounds...game over.

There needs to be an option in the blurb to NOT back a losing hand... something where I can just wave at everybody and jot something down in the ships'log as we go past the lost ship as it sinks, blows up or is eaten... since I didn't take the rescue mission in the first plce.

It is a main story line quest and yes, it cannot be skipped (but you can avoid the route on which you can find the quest). In the patch (soon to be released here), we have reduced the difficulty level of the quest combat.
