Uru is a somewhat bittersweet experience. The fact of the matter is that it's a broken game; divorced both from the safety of conventional design and from the massively multiplayer online play that was to be its centerpiece, Uru exists today only as the ruins of a grand, unrealized vision. But what spectacular ruins! You don't so much "play" Uru as wander its massive halls, gaping at the fantastical colors and textures and shapes, and pondering what it must have looked like in its own time... what it might have looked like if history had been different. Uru is beauty tinged with sadness.
he laments that the wonderful unrealized vision never was realized, the online core does not exist.

Myst Online: Uru Live Again
Welcome back, again.
The Ages of Uru are available again. We’ve opened all the Ages, and added most of the goodies in MO:UL. We’re referring to it as MO:ULagain—feel free to explore and enjoy.
And the cost is pretty good. Free!
To begin playing, click on the PLAY link to create an account.
If you’re so inclined, we’ve provided a way for you to DONATE to help offset our costs, and show your support. Five or ten bucks would go a long way toward helping pay the server and people bills.
We have also made most of the sources to MO:UL open source. You can see how MO:UL ticks, create your own shards, make improvements, fix bugs, create new ages. We will take some of the best improvements, ages and fixes from the fans and apply them to the live MO:UL server. If this interests you please check out the DEVELOPERS section.

We are getting ready to release Build 905! There are several fixes and new features - but the biggest is the fixing of the Minkata sparkie! Most all of these updates were created by fans and their efforts are very much appreciated by Cyan Worlds but mostly by everyone who plays MOULa.
The current plan is to do the update during next Monday's (Feb 13th, 2012) server restart. This will mean that the MOULa outage will be a bit longer as we do the update. Watch for Dexter's or Tor'i's MOULa Outage message.
And a very big special note: The OpenUru Minkata Test Shard was a tremendous help in keeping Cyan Worlds MOULa's costs down. This has 1) cut down my time/cost by only getting working changes (iterations are a time killer), 2) cut down the Cyan World's internal QA team costs in that they only have to do a verification of changes and 3) cut down server costs since we didn't have to create a beta test server. So, a big thanks! to all the people involved in the OpenUru Minkata Test Shard! Including all the testers!
when I found this server site fan run, I went to my programfile, computer, copy of the URU complete, installed from the Box cd/dvd, on my computer. I had installed it there over a year ago and I got into the first world and then went on to other things.
I fired it up and at the opening splash screen i clicked on the "check for updates" button.
a Server or Host was found and over 130 megs of files were downloaded!
now the version is "905", just as the update news, above, wrote about. this last update patch was done middle of February.
I now have a currant working URU complete online!
i then entered the game with my save.
this hard file install is not the GOG version though. I do not know how the updater will work with this gog file. someone else will have to post their findings here. there is no option with the installer of the patch update to "find" where the game is installed! you might even have to buy the "real" boxed game set! but hopefully someone here will post a way to update and to be online.
the Problem might well be that I installed the uru from the
http://mystonline.com/en
site, back when they restored the online. Thus this NEW online URU is not the box version server-link as the boxed version is directing the sever link to their server, which of course no longer exists. I suspect that the Gog version will also direct the multiplayer to the defunct server.
the "trick" will be to somehow get the multiplayer area of the gog-uru to "see" the new server's files. this is where someone must enter the thread to give advice! otherwise the only way to play the revived uru online is the directly download from their servers, in their downloading section after creating an account with them!
from what I read on that Uru site, a group of dedicated fans set up the servers and fan-made patches and more content, over the last few years. they ask for donations to help their costs.
thus that commentor, above, he is not aware that this Golden opportunity for a rich world, is not failed. at least a "Silver" version of the Vision is now realized!
