Too bad because the game used to be fun to play and it just shouldn't be that hard to take me there. $6 was cheap, but how much would I have to pay for a version that actually works?

Jonesy89: Hm, haven't experienced anything like this on Windows 7. What kind of rig are you working with, and when does the game start freeing?

pi4t: Well, if they can't get it working for you then they will give you your money back. Sadly, a small number of the games sold here do have problems running on some systems (King of Dragon Pass is the only other one I'm aware of, though I'm sure there are more in other genres), but there is now the guarantee of your money back if they can't get it working. Worst case scenario: you've wasted a bit of time trying to get it to work. Each computer is different and many different issues can create the same result: the game crashing. They've been getting you to try various methods of making your computer run the game more like an older system would have. It's not a fool's errand: in, maybe, 9 in 10 cases that method works. Occasionally the issue is something completely different, though, and something which there's no reasonable way to identify. There's no way to tell whether a given crash is going to be solvable by using the methods you've tried, except to try them, and they generally do work. But as I said, unlike certain other distributors I could mention, GOG has a generous (especially given that it's DRM free) refund policy which means they'll give you your money back if you keep doing what they say and it doesn't work.

On a more practical standpoint, I don't suppose you or a relative has another computer you could test it on, and see whether it crashes on that or not?

Incidentally, all the things you mentioned having been told to try have worked for me in getting games to run in the past, so they weren't a waste of time. In fact, it's remarkable how often the wicked witch's broomstick can make a stubborn program suddenly behave itself :P

(Ok, maybe that last sentence wasn't true, but the rest was!)

ranjean2003: Thank you for your thoughtful post. A few related points: I feel vindicated that a lot of people are having problems - see the thread under trying to get it to run under windows 8.

I'm glad they would give me a refund so that I know it wasn't a ripoff, just complications.

Lastly, I found out you can buy an old playstation with the Myst game. I did that. But even that seems to have a glitch with an elevator button that doesn't work! So hopefully I got the information I needed in the elevator in the GOG version and can use it on the playstation. However, now, which ever combination of quicktime etc. I have on my PC crashes all the time and I don't want to start running all those combinations again.
